PM, Sonia Gandhi promise speedy justice in Delhi gangrape case

A few days after he was widely criticised for his speech over the issue, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today assured the nation that the government was committed to brining the perpetrators of the brutal Delhi gangrape case to justice.

“We share the anguish and anger of the country over this heinous crime. Our prayers with the brave young girl,” Singh said

He said the government had formed two committees, one to look into improving laws tackling sexual assault against women and the other into looking into the gangrape case.

Both leaders said they were praying for the recovery of the 23-year-old woman. AFP

“You have my assurance that the government is committed to bringing the guilty to justice as soon as possible,” he said, after attending a brief function to mark the anniversary of the foundation of the Congress party.

Congress party president Sonia Gandhi said that the party normally greeted each other on the occasion of its founding day but this time they had refrained from it.

“..because our thoughts are with the young woman who is fighting for her life after the barbarous attack on her,” she said.

“Our only wish today is that she recovers and she comes back to us, and that no time is lost in bringing the perpetrator of the barbarous act to justice,” Gandhi said.

The victim of the gangrape is presently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore where her condition is said to be extremely critical.
