News Wrap: Porn scandal forces resignations; UP elections carry on

- A porn scandal rocked the Karnataka Assembly where the opposition Congress and JDS members sought suspension and disqualification from the house of the three former ministers involved. As soon as the assembly met, chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda informed the members about the resignations of the three Ministers who were caught on camera watching sleazy clippings on their mobile phone. - The President of Maldives resigned last night after some security officials joined opposition protests over the removal of a top judge.
But he has said that he was forced to resign “at gunpoint” by police and army officers in a coup.

- After an initial lull, polling in UP picked up after midday as the weather cleared. The elections on Wednesday recorded a moderate 55 per cent turnout on an incident-free day. The remaining phases of polling will be held on February 11, 15, 19, 23, 28 and March 3. The counting of votes will take place on March 6.

- Bharti Airtel’s Africa operations has narrowed its net loss to USD 52 million during quarter ended December 31, 2011, against USD 119 million in the same period last year. Customer base has also gone up to 50 million users.

- The chill in Europe is getting worse, especially for Ukraine where a lot of people have been reported dead. CNN’s correspondent Matthew Chance has a roundup in the bulletin.

- In sport, India overcame an early blip to beat Sri Lanka in the trination series in Australia. After restricting Sri Lanka to 233 for right, the Indians chased down the target with 20 balls to spare after suffering a mid-innings collapse which reduced them to 181 for 6 in 36 overs.
