News Wrap: Parliament in deadlock; Modi lands in nutrition soup

- The deadlock in Parliament continues as neither the BJP or the Congress back down on their respective demands regarding the coal row. The SP, TDP and Left parties are planning a dharna outside Parliament in protest against no work being done in the Parliament. They also said that this is ‘match-fixing’ by the BJP and Congress. We have Sonia Gandhi‘s views in our bulletin.

- Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been criticised for his comments on the high rate of malnutrition in his state. In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, he said that girls in Gujarat are very “beauty conscious” and this affects their weight. About half of Gujarat’s children under five were short for their age or had stunted growth. Modi’s answer thus implies that five-year old girls are figure-conscious. - Two Indian Air Force helicopters collided in mid-air near the Jamnagar air base today while they were carrying out a training sortie. Find a detailed report in the video.

- Over to sport and MS Dhoni believes that India need to be careful of New Zealand’s pace attack. The captains were speaking prior to the second Test which starts tomorrow. Ross Taylor mentioned that NZ meanwhile need to attack the spinners to force the field behind. In football, the Champions League draw takes place tonight at 830 PM. - And in the world of technology, Microsoft’s next version of the OS — Windows 8 is due for launch on 26 October. But yesterday, Samsung became the first company to launch a new smartphone with the Windows 8 OS at the IFA in Berlin. As far as technical specs go, the Windows 8 smartphone is on par with a lot of other high-end devices. The big factor will be how Windows 8 fares for users. Currently Microsoft needs to ensure that app developers start taking the OS seriously.

- Scientists have found that small patches of ice could make up five to 10 per cent of material inside a permanently shadowed lunar crater named ‘Shackleton’ located near the Moon’s south pole. Still too early to think about buying a house there…
