Mother seeks euthanasia for 14-year-old daughter in Tamil Nadu

by Jul 4, 2012

A woman has filed a petition before a Tamil Nadu court seeking permission to allow euthanasia for her 14-year-old daughter Mathumitha who has cerebral palsy.

“We’ve faced a lot of problems. She just lies in her bed, completely unaware of the world around her. We are forced to take this cruel decision, it’s something no parent can ever dream of. I hope the government will atleast give us a place to stay so that we can take care of her,” Mathumitha’s mother A Jaya told CNN IBN.

Jaya filed a petition before a court in Erode in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday seeking euthanasia for her daughter saying that the girl’s father was a carpenter and unable to make ends meet.

The monthly financial assistance from the state government was also not enough and attempts to get her into shelters for differently abled had also not worked out.

The Hindu quoted local collector VK Shanmugam, saying that they would speak to the management of a home for the differently abled.
