Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra have been chosen to be the new brand ambassadors of the Incredible India campaign, according to a Times of India report. The previous brand ambassador was Aamir Khan, whose contract was discontinued earlier this month amidst a huge controversy.
Khan's supporters insisted that he was booted out due to his intolerance comment in November 2015, when Khan had revealed that his wife Kiran Rao had asked if they should move out of the country, as she feared for the safety of their children in a climate of insecurity.
On the other hand, Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma insisted that it is a simple matter of expiration of contract.
“Our contract was with the McCann Worldwide agency for 'Atithi Devo Bhava' campaign. The agency had hired Aamir for the job. Now the contract with the agency is over. Ministry has not hired Aamir... It was the agency which has hired him. Since the contract with the agency is no more, automatically the arrangement with the actor no longer exists,” claimed Sharma.
However, when asked about Khan’s removal on Monday, Amitabh Kant, secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Amitabh Kant said, "The brand ambassador must be the best brand ambassador for promoting and marketing India, he cannot be the destroyer of the brand," without taking the actor's name.
"A brand ambassador promotes a brand. People will come to India and tourist flow will increase only if the brand ambassador of 'Incredible India' promotes the country as 'incredible'. But if the brand ambassador says India is intolerant, he surely is not working as brand ambassador.”
