The vessel, in which the girls had got trapped was filled one-fourth with wheat. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rajesh Vyas today said that the children might have failed to open the heavy lid once inside, and suffocated in the process.
The victims’ parents, who work as labourers, had left the girls with their grandmother before they went to work.
The girls were seeing playing till afternoon after which no one remembers seeing them. However, assuming they had gone to the fields nearby, nobody searched for them.
When they didn’t return till late in the night, their parents informed the police and lodged an official complaint.
However, when the girls’ grandmother opened the drum the next day, she found the bodies inside and called the police.
Police has not ruled out foul play and have started a probe into the incident.
