Hegde slams Mamata’s comment on judiciary

Aug 15, 2012

Bangalore: Former Supreme Court judge Santosh Hegde today slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her corruption in the judiciary remarks, saying it was ‘unbecoming’ of her to level such charges.

“It is not right to make unsubstantiated allegations by one constitutional authority over another. It is unbecoming of a chief minister to hurl such allegations,” he said in Bangalore.

Instead of hurling allegations against the judiciary, she could have brought them to the notice of the Chief Justice of India, Hegde, a former Karnataka Lokayukta, said.

“A person who is not holding a constitutional position can hurl accusations in public, but not a person holding an office as important as the chief minister,” Hegde said.

He refused comment when asked whether Banerjee has courted trouble over her remarks on day that there were instances when court judgements have been delivered for money.

Stoking a huge controversy, the TMC’s feisty leader had made the remarks at a seminar on the platinum jubilee of the state assembly, inviting criticism from various quarters.

“What I see. Why should many judgements today be delivered for money? Why? I am sorry to say. I am saying this in the Assembly,” she had said.
