Delhi: Chandni Chowk explosion kills one, injures five; police confirm blast due to firecracker

One person was reportedly killed in an explosion in front of a firecracker godown in the Naya Bazar area in Old Delhi, while several people were injured. According to The Times of Indiafive person were injured in the blast and the person killed is yet to be identified.  

A senior police officer said according to preliminary investigation, the explosion was caused due to a firecracker.

According to NDTV, the likely cause of the explosion is reportedly a cylinder blast in the wholesale market in Delhi. However, CNN-News18 reported that the explosion was caused due to some explosive material a man was carrying in a sack. The person carrying the firecrackers was reportedly killed in the incident. Window panes of the surrounding buildings were damaged due to the impact of the blast.

Forensic teams and officers from the Special Cell are on the spot and collecting samples.

The blast took place at around 11 am in the bustling commercial area with and narrow lanes and closely packed structures, according to Times Now. The TV channel also reported that some fire crackers and explosive material were also found at the spot.

Senior Police officials, fire tenders and ambulance have reached the spot and rescue operations are underway. As a precautionary measure, anti-terror squad was also called in. Further details are awaited. Delhi Police personnel have been maintaining a tight vigil in view of the festive season.
