Senior BJP leader Brijpal Teotia and five others were seriously injured when over 100 rounds of fire were opened on their car near Ghaziabad on Thursday. Teotia’s situation is said to be critical and doctors are operating him. According to Meerut zone IG Surjeep Pandey, at around 7.20 pm, unidentified assailants came in a car and opened fire at Teotia and others at Raoli Road under Muradnagar police station. The attackers were in a Toyota Fortuner car, which they abandoned after the attack and fled in an autorickshaw, according to ABP News. Over 100 rounds were fired from AK-47 rifles. “Rifles, AK 47 have been used in the attack… We are trying to arrest the culprits. Weapons used in the attack have been recovered,” said Daljeet Chaudhary, Additional Director General of Police Law and Order (ADGP), according to NDTV, The car in which the attackers were fleeing has also been recovered. Probing the motives behind crime, the police also said that preliminary evidence points at personal enimity was the reason behind the crime.

The police, so far, has detained three persons, including to a woman constable for questioning.

Teotia is considered to be a close aide of Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Singh’s son and BJP leader Pankaj Singh and Minister of State and senior BJP Mahesh Sharma visited the injured leader according to a report by ABP News_._ The 49-year-old BJP leader and five others were seriously injured in the incident, he said, adding that even though the police launched a chase, the culprits managed to flee. The injured were initially admitted at a hospital in Ghaziabad from where, Teotia was referred to Fortis Hospital in Noida, the IG said. Teotia, who had contested the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election from Muradnagar constituency, was on his way to Ghaziabad when the incident occurred, he added. With inputs from PTI
