Mumbai: Three people, including a woman, were arrested and a minor boy detained Thursday in connection with the murder of writer-poet Amrita Pritam’s son Navraj Kwatra here last week during a robbery, police said.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahesh Patil, accused Savita Gupta, 21, worked as Kwatra’s assistant. The other accused are Gupta’s 17-year-old brother, her boyfriend Vinay Bose, 24, and Bose’s friend Gaurank Khawale, 21.

Kwatra, 65, a photographer by profession, was strangled at his residence in Borivli in north Mumbai last Friday. Police later recovered female condoms and Viagra tablets from the crime scene.

Kwatra is survived by his wife, who lives in Delhi, and a daughter.

Giving details of the events that led to Kwatra’s murder, Patil said that Bose was in need of money and Gupta asked him to approach Kwatra whom she considered generous.

Bose and his friend Khawale, however, made plans to rob him. After keeping an eye on Kwatra’s residence for two days, Bose and Khawale tried to enter his apartment by convincing Gupta’s brother to keep an eye outside, Patil said.

The duo broke into Kwatra’s apartment and told him to handover whatever money he had in the house. When Kwatra raised an alarm, they gagged him, tied his hands and strangled him, police said.

The two then allegedly fled with Rs55,000 that they found at Kwatra’s apartment.
