After a brief struggle to survive three-month-old baby Afreen, who was admitted to a hospital with a dislocated neck and cigarette burns, died of cardiac arrest today.

Afreen reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest this morning and passed away, CNN-IBN reported.

The baby had been admitted to the hospital on Friday with a dislocated neck and cigarette marks on her body. She had also reportedly been struck on the head with a blunt instrument. She has been on a ventilator since admission.

“We are very sad to announce that baby Afreen had cardiac arrest…We finally declared the baby dead at 11:10 am,” Dr R Premalatha, spokesperson for Vanvilas Hospital said.

The doctors had attempted to get her heart pumping again but were unsuccessful, she said.

The fact that the child was on the ventilator and had been suffering from convulsions had meant that she was prone to suffering from cardiac arrest, Dr Premalatha said.

Doctors had said earlier today that she had been suffering from convulsions and was in a semi-comatose state.

The father’s child, reportedly a ice cream seller , Umar Farooq had been arrested by the police for assaulting his daughter. The child’s mother had alleged that he was upset by the birth of a daughter since he wanted a son and as a result had assaulted her.
