Indian wrestler Babita wins world championship bronze

New Delhi, Sep 28 (IANS) Babita Kumari (51kg) became the second Indian female wrestler to win a World Championships medal after she clinched a bronze in Edmonton, Canada.

According to information received here, Babita defeated Zamira Rakhmanova from Russia in the repechage round to win the bronze Thursday.

In the semi-final, Babita lost to local girl Jessica Anne Marrie Macdonald Bondy after which she entered the repechage where she won the bronze. Alka Tomar, who also won the bronze in 2006 China, is the first Indian woman to win a World Championship medal.

In the semi-qualification round, Babita defeated Hsin-Ju Chiu from Chinese Taipei. In the qualification round, she beat Japanese Risako Kawai.

Silpi Sheoran (59kg) and Navjot Kaur (67kg) finished fifth in their weight categories.

India are participating in all seven weight categories (48kg, 51kg, 55kg, 59kg, 63kg, 67kg and 72 Kg) that ends Saturday.
