Aug 22, 2011

Mumbai: As Anna Hazare‘s fast on the Lokpal issue entered the seventh day today, his supporters responded to his call and staged protests outside the residences of Members of Parliament (MPs) in the metropolis and other parts of Maharashtra.

Chanting slogans like ‘Jan Lokpal Bill pass karo‘ and ‘Anna Hazare zindabad‘, hundreds of protesters staged demonstrations in front of the residences of MPs, seeking their support for a strong anti-corruption ombudsman. ”We have got positive response only from Congress MPs Priya Dutt and Sanjay Nirupam, who are in support of Hazare.

Dutt said Government’s version of the Bill is ineffective and there are some points in Jan Lokpal Bill that need to be discussed. She gave us all this in writing,” Mannan Gandhi, Coordinator of India Against Corruption (IAC), which is spearheading the campaign, told PTI.

“While Nirupam wore ‘I Am Anna Hazare‘ cap and said he is against corruption, MPs Murli and Milind Deora did not come out of their house. Gurudas Kamat’s driver was unaware of his whereabouts and said everyone in his family is out of town,” Gandhi said.

“Phone calls to Kamat did not elicit any response and were disconnected several times, while Eknath Gaikwad (another MP) did not answer any of our questions,” he said.

“Anand Paranjpe (Shiv Sena MP) of Thane is not ready to face us, Sanjeev Ganesh Naik (NCP) of Navi Mumbai did not come out and Sanjay Patil (NCP) of Bhandup is out of Mumbai,” the IAC Coordinator said.
