Govt for focus on preparedness, disaster prevention

New Delhi: The Centre today pitched for focus on the whole gamut of disaster management with emphasis on measures of preparedness, prevention and mitigation.

Inaugurating the annual conference of relief commissioners of states for reviewing the preparedness relating to the South-West Monsoon 2012, Union home secretary RK Singh also stressed on the need for cutting the delay in dissemination of the early warning by the forecasting agencies to the responders for ensuring prompt action by them.

Singh brought out the importance of the institutions set up under Disaster Management Act, 2005 and urged the states and Union Territories to strengthen them.

In his keynote address, secretary (border management) AE Ahmad asked the officers concerned to expedite the activities relating to preparedness, response and capacity building.

He informed them about the initiatives taken by the Centre for strengthening of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in the past one year.
