Angelina Jolie has received the Honorary Heart award at the 17th Sarajevo Film Festival in Bosnia.

The 36-year-old star, who turned up at the festival unannounced with her partner Brad Pitt, was presented with the heart-shaped award at the closing ceremony for her directorial debut, ‘In The Land Of Blood And Honey’.

The film, which focuses on the tale of love between a Muslim woman and a Serb, had sparked considerable controversy.

The drama depicts “how the couple’s romance was affected by the 1992-95 Bosnian War”, in the Eastern European country last year.

“I am so honored to be here at this festival. There is no greater example of the strengths of the artists and the festival that began during the war and grew stronger every year,” she said.

An insider said that Jolie, who was clad in an Elie Saab gown, was moved “almost to tears” by the crowd’s nonstop applause.

The festival director, Mirsad Purivatra, praised her cinematic achievements and also her global humanitarian efforts.
