Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy’s 151st birthday celebrated

Kolkata: Rich tributes were paid to Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, eminent academician and founder of India’s first pharmaceutical company on the occasion of his 151st birthday today.

Roy was Born in 1861 and established Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals in 1901. A life-long bachelor, Roy used to teach chemistry in Presidency College here and authored ‘The History of Hindu Chemistry’. Famous scientists Meghnad Saha and Shanthi Swarup Bhatnagar were among his students. Also associated with the Brahmo Samaj, Roy led a simple life but with a missionary zeal.

Paying tribute to Roy, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said young scientists, scholars and academicians have much to learn from his ideals and works.

In a message on Facebook, she said his contribution is an example of how young talent can be used effectively within the state and imbibing his scientific mission would be the true tribute to him.
