Suresh Raina expected to take centrestage in 22nd JP Atray Memorial tournament

India's limited overs specialist Suresh Raina could be seen in action during the 22nd All India JP Atray memorial cricket tournament, to be played at multiple venues across the region, from 15 September onwards

Chandigarh: India's limited overs specialist Suresh Raina could be seen in action during the 22nd All India JP Atray memorial cricket tournament, to be played at multiple venues across the region, from 15 September onwards.

The tournament, being organised under the aegis of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) and recognised by BCCI, would be played on league-cum-knock out basis and the teams have been divided into four pools. Top two teams from each pool will qualify for the quarter-final stage, tournament's convener, Vivek Atray told a press conference in Chandigarh on Sunday.

Atray said in addition to Raina, wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Manan Vohra, Manpreet Gony, Siddharth Kaul, Aditya Tare, Nathu Singh, Pawan Suyal and Praveen Kumar will also be taking part in the tournament.

Chander Shekhar, Chairman of Organising Commitee, said 16 leading teams such as Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, Baroda Cricket Association, UPCA, DDCA, HPCA, PCA Colts, ONGC Delhi, Air India Delhi and Assam Cricket Association will be fighting it out for top honours.

He said the venues include IS Bindra PCA stadium in Mohali, which will also host the final on 25 September, Sector 16 cricket stadium in Chandigarh and Tau Devi Lal cricket stadium in Panchkula.

Atray said white SG Test balls will be used for the day-night final while red balls will be used for the day matches, with 31 games to be played in all.

He added that winners will get a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh along with the trophy and runners up will bag Rs one lakh.

"All the matches of the tournament, which would be played between 15-25 September, will be of 50 overs each innings and will be played under the BCCI rules," Sushil Kapoor, Organising Secretary of the tournament, said.

Current India stars such as Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir and former captain Kapil Dev had previously played in the tournament.
