Playing selector: Jaffer, Bhuvneshwar should make team

FP Sports, Feb, 10 2013

Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten 140 against the Rest of India team must have taken a huge burden off the shoulders of the Indian selectors. They are, at least, now sure of the kind of form that the master batsman is in. It was a classic innings in the sense that he did not make any mistakes, he looked solid and rarely if ever did he look ruffled.

For the selectors, the Irani Cup solved part of their problem. The batsmen -- those on display -- did their job well. Murali Vijay got runs as did Shikhar Dhawan. Suresh Raina worked his way to a determined ton as well. For Mumbai, Wasim Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane proved their mettle once again.

But while the batsmen did well, the bowlers didn't impress much. Ishwar Pandey has the pace, height and the movement but he is still too inexperienced. There is potential there for sure but he needs to be tested a little more. Sreesanth had some good moments but plenty of bad ones as well. Pragyan Ojha's bad form from the England Test series has continued into this match as well. And no one from Mumbai's bowling attack stood out either.

So the big question ahead of the India selectors when they sit down to select the squad for the Australia series is whether they have the bowlers to pick up 20 wickets?

Ishant Sharma has announced on Twitter that he is fit but he will probably not have any experience to support him. The selectors will probably have to fall back on Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who impressed in the ODIs against England and Pakistan, but is largely untested in the longer format.

Ahead of the selection meeting, we got Ayaz Memon to name his playing XI for the first Test against Australia on 22 February.
