Kolkata Test: Sporting pitches are a myth

FP Sports, Dec, 03 2012

What is the perfect cricket pitch? Most connoisseurs of the game won't bat an eyelid before they tell you that the pitch should offer assistance to pacemen on day 1 and day 2, it should have good consistent bounce to allow batsmen to play their shots, by day 4 and day 5 the spinners should come into the picture and the match should end in the final hour on the fifth day.

That's what people think. But how many such pitches have lovers of the game seen in their lifetime? Is the idea of sporting pitches a myth?

"By and large, yes. Sporting pitches actually become like that by chance. That's what happened in Australia. The match could have ended in two days but South Africa took it by the scruff of it's neck and never let go. But you can't blame just the pitch. India need to realise that conditions are in their favour, they have crowd support."

"Dhoni should not have been vocal about his demands for a pitch. These are things that are done throughout the world by all teams. It's not something new. Home advantage is almost a covenant."

Ayaz also had a few words to say about Prabir Mukherjee, the Eden Gardens curator, who said Dhoni's demand for a turning pitch was immoral.

"I don't agree with Prabir Mukherjee that Dhoni's demands were immoral. What is immoral? Last time we played at Perth, the match ended in two-and-a-half days... the Australian authority didn't say they wanted to watch India's great batsmen excite and exhilarate the spectators."

"I'm not saying we should have pitches which completely crumble in two days. But the charm of Test cricket is that conditions will vary from country to country and that's the challenge."
