Indian collector snaps up Bradman memorabilia

Sydney: Items belonging to the great Australian cricketer Donald Bradman were sold at bargain prices to an Indian collector on Saturday at an auction which failed to attract bids from the Bradman Museum.

Bradman's 1946 Baggy Green cap was expected to sell for $180,000 but made only $100,000 and the 1946 bat Bradman used to score 234 in a world record, fifth-wicket, 405-run partnership with Sid Barnes sold for $65,000, well below its estimate of $120,000.

A bat used by Bradman on a tour of Canada and the United States was expected to reach $15,000 but sold for $8,000 and a bat Bradman used for New South Wales and South Australia states went for $10,000, about half what was expected.

Auctioneer Tom Thompson said it was disappointing the Bradman Museum didn't bid on the items. But a museum spokesman said independent valuations had put the lots outside the museum's reach.
