India vs New Zealand, Highlights, 2nd ODI in Delhi: Kiwis beat hosts by 6 runs

  • That's it from us here. Join us for the 3rd ODI in Mohali. Good bye and take care.

  • Williamson: Very nice to talk about something else for a change. Lot of credit for the way we bowled, and pick up wickets. To just push the run-rate up was the key. I think the bowling was huge for us. We had just enough runs for the surface. The dew didn't help, but the spinners did their job. Seam bowling was tough to face on that surface. It was a very good game of cricket, and credit to India.

  • Kane Williamson is named the Man of the Match.

  • Boult: Not just myself, but great effort by the bowling unit. Very satisfying, and now we look forward to Mohali. Good sign to see the bowlers bowling well. Under-par on the wicket in terms of our score, but happy we could defend it. (On the 49th over of the innings) Tried to remain aggressive, knew that if we could contain runs, we could be at an advantage. Credit to smart bowling, mixing up length and pace.

  • OUT! GAME OVER! NZ win by 6 runs. A brilliant yorker from Southee! It's on the off stump, Bumrah can't get his bat down in time and finds his stumps rattled. Terrific delivery. New Zealand draw level 1-1.

  • Final over, Ball 1 : Umesh whips the first one through mid-wicket for a couple

Final over ball 2: Umesh mistimes his whack to mid off and gets a single

    7 needed off 4

  • Southee to bowl the last over. 10 needed off it.

  • After 49 overs,India 233/9 ( Umesh Yadav 15 , Jasprit Bumrah 0)

Yadav cuts one powerfully wide of third man but Bracewell does well to restrict to just single. Boult then bowls one very wide but it's just inside the line. The umpire doesn't react. Hardik then thumps one over mid off for a FOUR to breathe life into the crowd. Boult however responds with a yorker to bowl a dot next ball. Boult then removes Pandya and concedes just a single off the last ball. 10 needed off the last over.

  • OUT! Huge blow for India! Pandya departs. HH Pandya c Santner b Boult 36 (32b 3x4 0x6)

It's short outside off, Hardik charges down the track and looks to absolutely murder with a slap but ends up getting a top edge to deep cover where the fielder makes no mistake. Boult has been splendid today and he gets a crucial wicket.  11 needed off 7 now.

  • Boult continues...

  • After 48 overs,India 227/8 ( Hardik Pandya 32 , Umesh Yadav 13)

Hardik takes a single off the first ball. Yadav then cuts one wide of point, Southee puts in a brilliant dive in the deep to save a run. Yadav and Hardik then take singles of consecutive balls. After a dot, Umesh takes a single off the outside edge to make it 6 runs off the over. 16 needed off 12 now.

  • Henry to bowl the 47th over.

  • After 47 overs,India 221/8 ( Hardik Pandya 30 , Umesh Yadav 9)

Hardik flicks one wide of long on and scampers through for a couple. He then takes a single. The pressure gets to Southee and he bowls a leg side wide. Umesh misses the next but thumps one to square leg where Taylor makes a very good save to concede just a single. The pressure then gets to the kiwis as an overthrow results in an extra run as India get two off the penultimate ball. A single off the last ball makes it 8 runs off the over. 22 needed off 18.

  • Southee continues....

  • After 46 overs,India 213/8 ( Hardik Pandya 24 , Umesh Yadav 8)

Kohli is getting pretty excited. This is turning out to be a thriller. After a couple of singles, Boult brings one back in, Hardik is beaten for pace and swing, he misses. The ball hits his pads and races away to third man fence for four leg byes. Hardik then places one through point for a couple thanks to some lazy fielding by the point fielder. A singles off the last ball makes it 9 runs off the over. Hardik keeps the strike. 30 needed off 24 now.

  • Boult continues...

  • After 45 overs,India 204/8 ( Hardik Pandya 20 , Umesh Yadav 7)

India living by the sword. Hardik mistimes his pull to mid-wicket and they scamper through for a risky second, the fielder misses his shy at the non-striker's end. Umesh was struggling big time. Umesh then gets into the act and pulls it through mid-wicket for four. Two more singles in the over make it 9 runs from the over.

  • Southee back on.

  • After 44 overs,India 195/8 ( Hardik Pandya 16 , Umesh Yadav 2)

Hardik gets a lifeline. Umesh tucks it to mid-wicket, Hardik has taken off quickly and looks for a single but Umesh sends him back, Hardik is struggling but the fielder misses the shy. He was a goner had that hit. Umesh then gets a top edge on the pull but it falls safely to fine leg. Hardik does well to take a single off the last ball to retain strike. 2 runs off the over. 48 needed off 36.

  • After 43 overs,India 193/8 ( Hardik Pandya 15 , Umesh Yadav 1)

A good over for India. The crowd comes back to life. Hardik takes a couple with some good running and then after a couple of singles from each batsman, Hardik cuts one powerfully over point for a four. 8 runs off the over. 50 needed off 42.

  • Matt Henry back on.

  • After 42 overs,India 185/8 ( Hardik Pandya 8 , Umesh Yadav 0)

Brilliant over from Boult. Just one run conceded. He hurried the batsmen with extra pace. His economy rate is 1.71. 7-2-12-1. India need 58 off 48.

  • Boult back on. 59 needed from 54 with 2 wickets in hand. Will need a blinder from Hardik to win this for India.

  • After 41 overs,India 184/8 ( Hardik Pandya 7 , Umesh Yadav 0); need 59 to win from 54 balls

Part-timer Guptill gets introduced into the attack, and starts off with a couple of wides. OUT! India are seven down now, needing another 63 to win! Patel miscues a full toss from Guptill, and ends up serving a simple catch to Santner, one of the best fielders in the side, at long-on! Amit Mishra is the new batsman now. Nearly over for the hosts now!

OUT! Eight down! Mishra looks to slog towards midwicket, and ends up top-edging it to short third-man, where substitute Bracewell takes the catch. Most eventful over in the match so far, with four wides and two wickets coming off it!

Axar Patel c Mitchell Santner b Martin Guptill 17(22); Amit Mishra c sub (Doug Bracewell) b Martin Guptill 1(3)

  • After 40 overs,India 178/6 ( Axar Patel 17 , Hardik Pandya 6); need 65 to win from 60 balls

OUT! Biggest blow for the hosts at this stage, as Dhoni walks back for 39 off 65 balls! Slower one from Southee, Dhoni simply pushes this one back to the bowler, who takes a fantastic low, one-handed catch to break the budding partnership. The Black Caps will now feel they've got this sealed, though there's Axar and Hardik Pandya still to get rid of. Pandya ends the over with a drive through extra-cover!

OUT! MS Dhoni c&b Tim Southee 39(65)

  • After 39 overs,India 169/5 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 37 , Axar Patel 16); need 74 to win from 66

SIX! Axar's patience finally runs out, and he launches Santner over midwicket with a clean hit! They look more of such strikes now. Eight runs off the 39th over

  • After 38 overs,India 161/5 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 36 , Axar Patel 9)

Southee returns to the attack after a round of spin from both ends. Gives away just two singles, with Dhoni moving to 36. Pressure starting to build on the hosts now.

  • After 37 overs,India 159/5 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 35 , Axar Patel 8); need 84 to win from 78 balls

Three runs off the over, including a wide down Patel's leg side. Dhoni and Patel have built a steady partnership so far, and will have to step the scoring rate up if they are to keep the required rate under check.

  • After 36 overs,India 156/5 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 34 , Axar Patel 7); need 87 runs off 84 balls

Devcich begins cramping up in this over, pulling away from one of his deliveries in the process. The part-timer concedes seven off this one, and has one more over to go in his quota now.

  • After 35 overs,India 149/5 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 30 , Axar Patel 5); need 94 to win from 90 balls

The players replenish themselves with some drinks, with the batsmen facing an uphill task before them. Tight eighth over by Santner, with just two singles coming off it.

  • After 34 overs,India 147/5 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 29 , Axar Patel 4); need 96 runs off 96 balls

While India's required rate is still at a run-a-ball, they may not have as many wickets in their kitty as they would like. Tidy over by Devcich, with four coming off it.

  • After 33 overs,India 143/5 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 27 , Axar Patel 2)

Santner returns to the attack. Two singles taken in the over. Axar is one of the last recognised batsmen for the hosts now, and Dhoni will rely heavily on him to keep the hosts in contention.

  • After 32 overs,India 141/5 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 26 , Axar Patel 1)

A very good over from Henry. He got the key wicket of Jadhav who was looking ominous and conceded just 2 runs.

  • OUT! Henry provides the crucial breakthrough. K Jadhav c Ronchi b Henry 41 (37b 2x4 2x6)

It's very full outside off, Jadhav stays back and looks to steer but ends up getting an outside edge to the keeper. The 66-run stand is broken.

Axar Patel is the new batsman

  • After 31 overs,India 139/4 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 25 , Kedar Jadhav 41)

Sensible from India. Five singles taken without any fuss.

Preview: Brimming with confidence after a convincing victory in the first One-Day International (ODI), limited-overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will eye another big win when favourites India take on New Zealand in the second match of the five-match rubber at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium here on Thursday.

With the conditions at the Ferozeshah Kotla favouring the spinners, the hosts will bank on their last ODI performance where Kedar Jadhav and experienced leggie Amit Mishra ran through the Kiwi's middle and lower order.

It is also expected that Dhoni will not make any changes to the playing eleven as each player seemed like complementing each other in the last match.

Star batsman Suresh Raina will miss the second ODI against New Zealand as the southpaw is still recovering from a bout of viral fever.

In the batting department, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey and Dhoni had decent starts in the last game and are expected to score big runs in the second game.

The bowling department has settled down into a nice rhythm as pacers and spinners chipped in with vital breakthroughs when needed.

Sent into bat in the last ODI, New Zealand would have been disappointed to be bowled out with 37 balls still remaining in their innings so skipper Kane Williamson will likely make some changes in the top order.

Apart from Tom Latham, batsmen Martin Guptil, Ross Taylor and Williamson looked clueless against the Indian bowlers and will have to come good if they want to match India at Ferozeshah stadium.

In the bowling department, Pacer Trent Boult will likely be included in the squad to support Tim Southee to trouble the Indian batting line-up. Spinners Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi had also found it hard to bowl on the flat Dharamsala track. But on the Ferozeshah wicket both spinners will like to make their case stronger as conditions there will support the spinners.

The squads:
India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain and wicket-keeper), Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Manish Pandey, Jayant Yadav, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Kedar Jhadav, Mandeep Singh, Amit Mishra, Dhawal Kulkarni, Umesh Yadav, Hardik Pandya.

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (captain), Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Anton Devcich, Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Matt Henry, James Neesham, Luke Ronchi (wicket-keeper), Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling, Tim Southee.
