  • The Indians were cruising for about one-and-a-half sessions, and at 188/0, they looked set to cross the 400-run mark on the very first day. Then the spin duo of Pushpakumara (3/40) and Lakshan Sandakan (2/84) helped the hosts stem the flow of runs from the Indian batsmen, sustaining the pressure till the very last ball of the day's play.

That brings us to to end of our coverage of the first day, and we look forward to the second day to see if the hosts are able to restrict Kohli and company to a total within 400 — one that actually will give them a lot of confidence in the remainder of the game. For now, we bid you goodbye.

A fine day for Sri Lanka. India end with 329/6 losing another 3 wickets for 58 runs in the final session. We can say that Sri Lanka have dominated this first day barring the partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul in the morning. For the first time in the series, India will feel the pressure a bit going into day two.

  • After 90 overs,India 329/6 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 13 , Hardik Pandya 1)

Fernando bowls the last over of the first day of the final Test. Saha guides the second ball towards the leg side to collect a single. Pandya finally gets off the mark with a single down the ground in the third delivery of the over. No runs off the remainder of the over, with the visitors going into stumps on a score of 329/6.

  • After 89 overs,India 327/6 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 12 , Hardik Pandya 0)

Saha collects a bounday at the start of the second-last over of the day, getting the ball to deflect off his gloves over the slip cordon, and running away to the third man boundary. Hands the strike to new batsman Hardik Pandya with a single in the second ball of the over. Dots off the remainder of the 89th over, with five coming off it.

Ashwin goes! Two overs remaining in the day and Sri Lanka have another... India have lost 3 more wickets in this last session and Lanka will be pressing to get either Saha or Hardik Pandya too. Suddenly this Test has come alive... on a dead-looking track mind you!

  • FOUR! Saha looks to fend a rising delivery, but ends up getting pinged on his gloves, with the ball flying over the slip cordon towards the third man fence. India 326/6

  • OUT! Superb catch by wicketkeeper Dickwella off an outside edge by Ashwin, as India lose their sixth wicket in the closing overs of Day 1. Fernando strikes for the first time in the innings! India 322/6

    Ashwin c Dickwella b Fernando 31(75)

  • After 88 overs,India 322/6 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 11 , )

Change of ends for Fernando, who now bowls from the Rikkilagaskadad End in the 88th over of the innings. Saha guides the third ball of the over through midwicket to collect a couple of runs, collecting a single in the following delivery. Ashwin though, departs in the last ball of the over, getting a thick edge that carries wide of the keeper, who pulls off a stunning catch to give Fernando his first wicket (also the first pacer to grab a wicket this innings). Three runs and a wicket off it.

  • After 87 overs,India 319/5 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 31 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 8)

Kumara returns to the attack in the 87th over, with Ashwin collecting a single at the start of the over, guiding it towards the point boundary, where a sweeper cuts the ball off. Saha returns the strike to Ashwin two deliveries later with a single. The latter guides the penultimate delivery towards midwicket to collect a couple of runs. Four off the over.

  • After 86 overs,India 315/5 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 28 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 7)

Maiden over for Pushpakumara, his second, in the 86th over of the Indian innings. It already is past 5 pm, which is beyond playing hours, though Sri Lanka's slow over-rate means they have another four overs to bowl in the innings.

  • After 85 overs,India 315/5 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 28 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 7)

Fernando brought back into the attack in the 85th over, replacing Sandakan in the attack. Ashwin clips the second ball of the over towards fine-leg, collecting his first boundary. Massive appeal for lbw in the fourth ball, with Chandimal deciding to review the umpire's decision, though it turns out to be a terrible one on the Sri Lankan captain's part due to a thick inside-edge by the batsman. Ashwin collects a couple of runs off the last ball, guiding once again in the direction of fine-leg. Six off the over.

  • FOUR! Ashwin clips the second ball of the 85th over towards fine-leg, with the ball reaching the boundary rope before the running fielder can stop it. First boundary for the Indians in nearly 22 overs! India 313/5

  • After 84 overs,India 309/5 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 22 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 7)

The second new ball finally has been taken by the hosts at the 84th over, and it is Pushpakumara who gets the first use of the shiny new cherry. Ashwin collects a single in the fifth ball of the over by guiding it towards sweeper cover. Just one off it.

  • After 83 overs,India 308/5 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 21 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 7)

Sandakan into his 25th over, with the hosts showing no inclination towards the second new ball as yet. Two singles are all that are scored off this over.

  • After 82 overs,India 306/5 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 20 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 6)

Pushpakumara bowls his 16th over. Ashwin guides the third ball towards cover to collect a single, and move to 20. Saha guides one towards midwicket two balls later, getting a single for himself. Two runs scored in the 82nd over.

  • After 81 overs,India 304/5 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 19 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 5)

Sandakan bowls the 81st over of the innings. Ashwin hands the strike back to Saha with a single at the start of the over. The Indian wicketkeeper-batsman then gets off the mark, and brings up the team 300 with a couple of runs in the third ball of the over, pushing it towards the off side. Saha gets more runs in the next delivery, paddling it past the keeper to get another double, this time in the fourth delivery. Seven off the over.

  • After 80 overs,India 297/5 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 17 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 0)

Pushpakumara continues from the other end, bowling the 80th over, and concedes just one off it as Ashwin collects a single in the second delivery of the over. The second new ball is available now, though it remains to be seen if the hosts opt for it straightaway. The reviews are also reset for both sides, though India had both of theirs available at the end of the over.

  • Chetan Narula, Freelance cricket journalist

Big one for Sri Lanka.... Virat Kohli is out!! Plays away from body once again... like in the second Test and caught at slip. Lankan spinners Pushpakumara and Sandakan now have 5 wickets between them. On a day one flat track... Lanka on top here!

  • After 79 overs,India 296/5 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 16 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 0)

Kohli perishes in the second ball of the 79th over, as the second delivery of the over drifts away from the Indian captain, and gets an outside edge off an attempted drive. Karunaratne is not one to mess up this time, as he takes a clean catch at slip. The Sri Lankans decide to review an unsuccessful appeal for caught-behind in the very first delivery that new batsman Saha faces, though it is his bat hitting the ground around the same time that gives him the benefit of doubt. Wicket maiden for Sandakan.

  • OUT! It is the Indian captain who has to depart, getting a thick edge to Karunaratne in the slips off an attempted drive, and falling eight short of a half-century. India 296/5

    Kohli c Karunaratne b Sandakan 42(84)

  • Chetan Narula, Freelance cricket journalist

Kohli and Ashwin have batted out nearly 50 deliveries. But scoring has been down. It is not what India are looking for at the moment. They are waiting out this period and staying at the wicket. Imperative for India that this pair takes them to stumps.

  • After 78 overs,India 296/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 42 , Ravichandran Ashwin 16)

Ashwin pushes the fourth ball of the 78th over towards extra-cover to collect a single. Kohli returns for a second after whipping the ball away wide of backward point, giving the fielder a fair bit of chase. The Indian captain collects a single off the last ball of the over to retain strike for the following over. Another two overs before the second new ball becomes available.

  • After 77 overs,India 292/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 39 , Ravichandran Ashwin 15)

Ashwin hands the strike back to Kohli at the start of the 77th over, bowled by Sandakan. Three dots later, Kohli guides the ball towards third man to collect a couple of runs. Three off the over.

  • Back where it belongs!

  • After 76 overs,India 289/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 37 , Ravichandran Ashwin 14)

Pushpakumara, Sri Lanka's leading bowler so far by a distance, bowls the 76th over. Ashwin dances down the track, and pushes the first delivery towards the midwicket boundary, though the batsman gets only a couple of runs on that occasion thanks to the slow outfield. Three off the over.

  • After 75 overs,India 286/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 37 , Ravichandran Ashwin 11)

Sandakan comes in place of Kumara in the 75th over of the innings. Kohli guides the first ball wide of short fine-leg, collecting a couple of runs in the process. Pushpakumara continues from the other end, bowling his 11th over. Kohli clips the first ball towards the leg side to collect a single, which is the only run scored in the over. The Indian captain, meanwhile, has quietly moved into the 30s at the moment.

  • After 71 overs,India 277/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 31 , Ravichandran Ashwin 8)

Lahiru Kumara returns to the attack from the Hunnasgiriya end, bowling the 71st over. Ashwin slips at the non-striker's end while looking for a second run after guiding the ball towards backward square-leg. Two singles scored in the over.

  • After 70 overs,India 275/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 30 , Ravichandran Ashwin 7)

Pushpakumara into his 10th over. Ashwin guides the third ball of the over between midwicket and mid-on to collect a single. Just one off the over. The young pacer still boasting of excellent figures.

  • After 69 overs,India 274/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 30 , Ravichandran Ashwin 6)

Sandakan bowls the 69th over. Kohli continues to trade in singles, doing so at the start of the over. Gets another couple of runs two deliveries later, this time guiding it towards backward point. Six off the over, with Ashwin retaining strike for the following over with a single off the last ball.

Kohli opts to keep the scoreboard ticking, collecting a single at the start of Pushpakumara's ninth over. Ashwin though, remains defensive in the remainder of the over.

  • Chetan Narula, Freelance cricket journalist

Rahane bowled playing down the wrong line. Played for the turn on a flat pitch. Malinda Pushpakumara has 3-24. They call him Rangana Herath's long-term replacement and he is living up to that billing here

  • After 67 overs,India 267/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 28 , Ravichandran Ashwin 1)

Sandakan into his 19th over. Kohli guides the second ball of the over towards mid-on for a single, bringing Ashwin back to strike. Ashwin then gets off the mark with a single in the fourth delivery, guiding it towards the off side. Kohli guides the first ball of the 6th over, bowled by Pushpakumara, towards the leg side, getting enough time for a couple of runs. Gets Rahane back on strike in the second delivery with a single. Rahane is castled in the fourth delivery after getting his defence beaten with an arm-ball, with the batsman looking to guide it towards the leg side on that occasion. Three runs and a wicket off this over. Ravichandran Ashwin is the new batsman at the crease.

  • After 65 overs,India 261/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 23 , Ajinkya Rahane 17)

Sandakan bowls the 65th over. Bit of a mix-up between Rahane and Kohli at the start of the over, with the former looking for a run, and running off quite a bit before being sent back. Just one off the over.

  • After 64 overs,India 260/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 22 , Ajinkya Rahane 17)

Pushpakumara returns to the attack in the 63rd over, bowling from the Rikillagaskada end. Looks like Sri Lankan captain Chandimal has gone back to spin from both ends. Just one off the over, with Kohli guiding the fourth ball down the ground for a single.

  • After 63 overs,India 259/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 21 , Ajinkya Rahane 17)

Sandakan into his 17th over. The hosts opt to review an unsuccessful lbw appeal in the second ball of the over, and the hawkeye shows the ball missing leg after turning sharply from outside off. Rahane pulls the third ball towards deep midwicket. The fielder in the deep pulls off a brave dive, but cannot stop the ball from crossing over. Four off the over.

Final session of the day... Lanka took 3 for 41 before tea to peg India back. Despite the score, Kohli-Rahane have a job to do here. Meanwhile, another couple wickets and Lanka would win this day comprehensively.

Preview: With the three-match Test cricket series already in the bag, a ruthless India will aim to continue their domination in the third match, beginning here on Saturday, as they eye a whitewash over the hosts for the first time.

Virat Kohli's men have vanquished the Islanders in the first two Tests, posting easy wins through all-round performances.

In the first Test at Galle, India registered a 304-run triumph, while in the second Test at Colombo, the size of victory became bigger -- an innings and 53 runs. The second Test also witnessed India defeating Sri Lanka by a margin of an innings in Sri Lanka for the first time.

India captain Virat Kohli and Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal.

India captain Virat Kohli and Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal.

If India win the third Test, they will win nine Tests in Sri Lanka, the most by a visiting side.

The gulf in quality between the sides has been huge. While India boast a squad of settled personnel who are competing for the last two to three years and are on top of their game, the Sri Lanka side is looking thin on international pedigree post the retirement of some of their biggest players.

Coming into the third Test, to be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka have been weakened by injuries to veteran spinner Rangana Herath, pacer Nuwan Pradeep and all-rounder Asela Gunaratne. Especially, Herath's absence, due to back stiffness, will give a headache to skipper Dinesh Chandimal.

The home bowling line-up has failed to curb the Indian batting. The visitors have piled 600 plus scores twice in the first two Tests, with the runs coming from all the batters.

Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara have all been among the runs. Moreover, the lower order too has contributed handsomely.

At least one change in the visiting side is guaranteed due to the suspension of Ravindra Jadeja, who has collected six demerit points inside a 24-month period.

The world's top-ranked all-rounder and bowler Jadeja has played a crucial role in putting India on top in the two previous Tests. He has taken as many as 13 wickets and scored 85 runs as he and his fellow slow-bowling partner Ravichandran Ashwin have tormented the Sri Lankans.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel has been named in the squad for the match. But left-arm wrist (chinaman) spinner Kuldeep Yadav seems to be the front-runner to take the position of Jadeja.

The 22-year-old Uttar Pradesh talent was impressive in his only Test till date -- against Australia in March in Dharamsala, picking up four wickets. If fielded, it will be another great opportunity for him to showcase his precocity against a side clearly low on confidence.

Sri Lanka have scored more than 300 runs in only one innings in the first Two Tests and going by that it will be another uphill task for the home batters.

Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis cracked hundreds in the second innings of the second Test and that will help them gain some confidence since runs coming among the top-order batsmen are crucial. Experienced middle-order batsmen Angelo Mathews (167 runs) and Dinesh Chandimal (82) need to shoulder responsibility for Sri Lanka to avoid another rout.

The bowling line-up is too thin on experience sans Herath, a veteran of 83 Tests. Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera (19 Tests), all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva (10) and left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara (1) will share the bowling duties.

Fast bowlers Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Gamage have been added to the squad.

The squads:

India: Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (Captain), Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, Wriddhiman Saha (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Abhinav Mukund, Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav.

Sri Lanka: Dinesh Chandimal (Captain),Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, Dimuth Karunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Lahiru Thirimanne, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Gamage, Dilruwan Perera, Malinda Pushpakumara, Lakshan Sandakan.
