Could the 2014 IPL be moved to Sri Lanka or Bangladesh?

Could the 2014 IPL be headed out of India? According to reports, that is a distinct possibility if the tournament happens to coincide with national elections, which could be held next year.

The current UPA government’s term ends in May 2014 and if elections are held then, it would overlap with the IPL, running the risk of the tournament not receiving enough security to be held safely in the country, which is what happened in 2009.

Then Lalit Modi moved the tournament to South Africa in a matter of a few weeks, but this time the board does not want to be caught flatfooted.

"A clear picture will emerge only after the dates for the Lok Sabha elections are announced, a board official told the Indian Express. “Until then, we are considering whether to have a few games in India and then move abroad, or vice versa. Both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are short journeys, so logistically, it won't be much of a problem.”

One possible consideration for an alternative host is the likelihood of spectator interest. Sri Lanka has a multitude of players in the IPL, while Shakib-al-Hasan is the only Bangladesh cricketer with an IPL contract. If the BCCI wants pack stadiums to be shown on TV, Sri Lanka would be a better venue, provided that tickets are priced reasonably.

The BCCI and the franchises would not be able to make as much money from ticket sales as they would in India, so there would be a financial cost to moving the tournament as well. `
