  • The openers shared a brilliant stand but once Kedar Jadhav struck to get rid of Dickwella, the innings just spiraled down the drain. The spin trio of Jadhav, Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal never let the pressure off and it resulted in batsmen playing false shots. Mathews kept fighting at one end as he has done throughout his career but could not do much. India will be happy with their work so far and will back themselves to chase it down. Sri Lanka will need something special to stop the visitors from taking a 1-0 lead. Join us in a while for the chase.
  • What a meek surrender! Sri Lanka lost the toss but were in a commanding position at 139 for 1. But what followed from there was a classic case of top order setting up the platform but the middle order just forgetting that there was a train to be boarded. They just missed the plot to lose wickets at regular intervals. Only Dickwella scored a fifty as the rest were chasing a quick flight home.
  • 43.2 OUT! The two-card trick does it! Bumrah now bowls it on the stumps, fuller length, Fernando plays all around it and has his furniture disturbed. Mathews is left stranded. Sri Lanka bowled out for 216!

  • Jasprit Bumrah called back on.
  • 42.6 FOUR! Edged but wide of the keeper! Good length outside off, Mathews looks to poke at it. He gets an edge which runs down to the third man fence. Dhoni dived but could not get to the ball. 216/9

  • Change of bat for Mathews.
  • 42.4 Mathews gets in line and punches it to the left of the bowler.
  • 42.3 Bowls it outside off, Mathews makes room to get it away but misses it.
  • 42.2 Slower bouncer outside off, pulled towards deep square leg.
  • 42.2 WIDE! Slants it down the leg side for a wide. Indians have bowled quite a lot of those.
  • Mathews is the lone warrior for Sri Lanka out there in the middle.
  • 42.1 NOT OUT! Smart batting! Good length around off, Mathews works it through mid on and wants two. The throw comes in at the bowler's end and the bowler takes the bails off, appeals. Replays show that Fernando was way inside the crease. A direct hit would have resulted in a wicket though.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns for a bowl. The umpire has gone upstairs for a run out appeal against Vishwa Fernando!
  • 41.6 Stays back and turns one towards the leg side. End of a decent spell for the Indian leggie. 209/9

  • 41.4 Bowls the leg spinner outside off, punched into covers.
  • 41.3 Floats it outside off, pushed into covers by Fernando.
  • Vishwa Fernando is the last man!
  • 41.3 OUT! Stumped off a wide, the plan works! Chahal was expecting the charge and bowls it wide outside off. Malinga comes down to have a go but cannot reach it. Dhoni has ages to stump the Lankan pacer. That was well planned. Wide signaled but India won't mind it.

  • Thisara Perera is the new man in.
  • 34.2 OUT! The young man shows zero temperament! You may be naturally aggressive as a batsman but you also need to respect the match situation. Patel lands it around middle and leg, Hasaranga hurries down to go big over the leg side but miscues it. The ball skies towards deepish wide mid on where Jadhav backpedals and takes a tumbling catch. He gets up and holds his bum in pain. Good effort nonetheless, he never took his eyes off the ball. Surely, this fielding effort will please the skipper.

  • 32.2 OUT! Surely this guy has a golden arm! Whatever he touches turns to gold and this is just another example of it! Bowls a high full toss outside off, Upul Tharanga thinks of clearing Dambulla but fails to time it as well as he wants to. Goes straight to the fielder at wide long on. Dhawan accepts it gleefully and Jadhav has a wry smile on his face. The umpires check for the height but replays show that it was a legal delivery for sure. • 8.5 FOUR! Well played! Shorter and outside off, Dickwella rides the bounce and taps it between short third man and backward point for a boundary. 50 up for the home side. A significant partnership between the two. Interestingly, this is Sri Lanka's first opening stand of 50-plus runs in ODIs against India since February 2014.
  • 8.5 Is that out? Nope! Shorter and around leg, Dickwella looks to pull but is beaten. The keeper collects and appeals since the umpire does not signal it a wide. India ponder about the review and then the umpire signals the wide. Quite strange to view that.
  • 8.4 Fuller and outside off, Gunathilaka drives it towards mid off and takes off. Kohli has a shy at the bowler's end but misses. Even if he had hit that one, Danushka's dive had saved him.

  • 7.4 FOUR! Bad ball and punished! Pandya bowls a length ball around off, Gunathilaka was waiting for it and pulls it over the mid-wicket region for a boundary. One reckons these two are now going to play their shots, having spent enough time at the wicket.
  • 7.3 FOUR! Hit away! This time he beats the fielder! Short and around middle, Gunathilaka makes room and cracks it wide of the diving backward point fielder for a boundary. Good shot, that.

  • 6.6 WIDE! Slants one down the leg side, Gunathilaka shuffles outside off and that makes it look really silly. Wide signaled. The bowler is not happy.
  • 6.5 Short again, following Dickwella who is moving around the crease, Niroshan pulls it through backward square leg for a single.

  • 4.4 Bowls it just outside off, pushed to the right of the bowler.
  • Fine leg comes into the circle.
  • 4.3 Bowls it around off and middle, Gunathilaka looks to swing it over the leg side but gets hit on his body. That was a tad short and hence he went for the pick up shot.

  • 3.6 Good length around middle and leg, Dickwella shapes to clip but gets hit on his pads. 20/0
  • 3.5 Dickwella shuffles but Pandya follows him, Niroshan can only tap it to the leg side.
  • 3.4 Good length around middle, played to point by the batsman.
  • 3.3 Fullish around middle and leg, played back to the bowler.
  • Strong breeze does not help Pandya as he has to abort his delivery stride. The build of Hardik is not quite ideal either. He is slim and thin, so you can understand...
  • 3.2 Fuller around off to Dickwella, comes in a touch, Dickwella gets across and defends it watchfully.
  • 3.1 Bowls it on middle and leg, worked towards long leg for a single. Pandya is yet to bowl outside off in this game. Must be a plan.
  • 2.6 Goes round the wicket and bowls it outside off, Gunathilaka taps it towards covers for a quick single. Jadhav did not pick it up that well else there could have been a chance of a run out. Good start this for Sri Lanka. 19/0
  • 2.5 FOUR! Lovely shot! Kumar bowls it outside off, Gunathilaka goes after the width and crashes it through the covers for a boundary. Just shows how good the pitch is. 9 runs from the over already.
  • 2.4 In the gap! Shortish outside off, Niroshan picks the gap well with his dab between the second slip and gully fielders. A single to third man results. That was close.

  • 1.5 WIDE! Continues to bowl down the leg side, Danushka cannot clip it through. Wide signaled.
  • 1.4 FOUR! Full but on the pads, Gunathilaka clips it in the air but in the gap at mid-wicket for a boundary. That was neatly done as it was in the gap.
  • 1.3 Again on the pads, worked through square leg for a couple of runs. Gunathilaka is off the mark as well.
  • 1.2 Beaten! Bowls it around off, Gunathilaka has to play at it. The ball pitches and goes away with the angle to beat the batsman on his poke.
  • 1.1 Starts with one on middle and leg, Dickwella nudges it towards the leg side for a single. That bounced a touch more on Niroshan and he took one hand off his bat there. Pandya does have a deceptive shorter one.
  • Hardik Pandya to bowl with the second new ball from the other end.
  • 0.6 Good length outside off, punched into covers from the crease. 1/0
  • 0.5 Full and going across Gunathilaka, left alone. That did not quite get up off the deck.

  • 0.3 Full and wide outside off, a confident leave from Gunathilaka.
  • 0.2 On the pads this time, Dickwella works it towards mid-wicket for a single.
  • 0.1 Edged! Starts off with a fuller length ball outside off, Dickwella pokes at it and gets an outside edge which falls short of the second slip fielder. Good start for Kumar!
  • The players are out in the middle. The two Sri Lankan openers are Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka. India begin with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Two slips in place. Here we go...
  • Time for the national anthems.
  • Upul Tharanga says that he would have batted first since the deck looks good to bat. Mentions that they need to forget the Test series and start afresh. Is happy that the likes of Lasith Malinga and Thisara Perera are back for the ODIs.
  • Virat Kohli says that he will chase. Recalls that its been a while they played on this track and remembers that it was last in 2010. Mentions that the ball came well onto the bat during practice last night which means the track has changed a bit since last time. Adds that his luck with the toss is changing a bit and reckons that it is always a good feeling to have it his way. Calls it a happy memory to return to the place where he made his debut. Ends by saying that they are looking to improve even after winning and that's never an easy thing. Shardul Thakur, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey and Kuldeep Yadav are the players who miss out.
  • Toss - India win the toss and opt to field first. Vishwa Fernando makes his ODI debut for Sri Lanka.
  • India on the other hand have already shown what they are aiming for - building a team for the mega event. Virat Kohli has talked about giving players roles and observing how they go about their job. They do start as favorites but will remember that they were beaten by the very same team in the Champions Trophy earlier this year. They will want to be cautiously confident than being complacent.
  • Hello everyone and welcome to the coverage of the first ODI between Sri Lanka and India at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Dambulla. The hosts put up no fight in the Test series but cricket fans around the globe will hope that the ODIs are not the same. The home side needs to win at least two games out of the five in the series to ensure automatic qualification in the 2019 World Cup.
  • So that's it from us for this game. We hope you enjoyed our coverage. India absolutely mauled Sri Lanka and will aim for more of the same in the coming games. The second ODI will be played on the 24th of August 2017 at 1430 local (0900 GMT) at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Until then, it's goodbye and take care!
  • Virat Kohli says that Sri Lanka got off to a really good start and it did put them under pressure. Calls it a really good wicket to bat which is why they chose to chase since it is easy to play strokes under lights. Credits the bowlers for getting the breakthroughs. Lauds Dhawan's efforts and credits him for cashing in and making the chances count. Hopes that they keep Dhawan in the good zone as he can win them games single-handedly. Mentions that they have started planning for the World Cup in 2019 and are happy to take on challenges. Informs that there will be quite a few surprises in the coming games. On not playing Kuldeep Yadav, he responds by saying that Axar Patel gives a batting option as well and they were happy to play only one wrist spinner. Believes that it is always about the balance of the side.
  • Upul Tharanga says that once the Indians capitalized it became really difficult for them. Reckons that they were aiming for 300 while batting but to reach that someone needed to carry on and get a good score which didn't happen. Ends by saying that they will have to learn from their mistakes and be consistent with both the bat and the ball.
  • Man of the Match, Shikhar Dhawan says that things are going very well for him and he is just playing his natural game. Feels that his performances have given him the confidence to play freely. Mentions that he went in with positive intent and that worked in favour of him.
  • The hosts will be disappointed that they could not even fight. None of their bowlers looked threatening and their fielding too was below standard. Earlier in the day, it was the Indian spinners who choked the Lankans with some tight bowling after they got off to a great start. The visitors claimed 9 for 77 to push the hosts off the track and restricted them to a paltry total. A lot of soul-searching is the need of the hour for the Islanders if they want to stay alive in the series.
  • Nothing much to write really! India chased down the target of 217 with ages to spare and the only wicket that Sri Lanka managed was due to the fault (or bad luck) of the Indian opener, Rohit Sharma. Both Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli had an extended nets session out in the middle as the bowlers for the hosts failed to create any pressure. Dhawan helped himself to a ton while the Indian skipper notched up yet another 50-plus score in a run chase.
  • 28.5 FOUR! India win by 9 wickets with 127 balls to spare! Loops it around off, Dhawan comes down and just eases it through the mid off region for a boundary. India ease into a 1-0 lead in the 5-match ODI series.

  • 22.6 Shorter and outside off, Kohli punches it towards point. 163/1

  • 22.4 Nudges it through mid-wicket for a couple of runs.
  • 22.3 Shorter in length on middle, Dhawan mistimes his pull towards mid-wicket. They take a single as Hasaranga misses his shy at the bowler's end. Replays show had he hit, Dhawan would have been out.
  • 44th ODI fifty for Virat Kohli!

He celebrates it like he always does, with a beaming smile and arms spread wide like the Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. He has really nailed the opening slot now. Just think about it. • 4.6 OUT! What a way to get run out! Rohit stays behind the line of the ball and pushes it towards the cover region. He calls for a single, Kapugedera rushes towards the ball to his right and has a shy at the non-striker's end. A direct hit is scored and Rohit seems to have lost his bat in the process of completing the run. The players appeal and the umpire goes upstairs. Replays show that the bat got stuck just before the crease and Sharma's front leg was in the air when the ball hit the stumps. A lazy effort from Rohit and he has no one else to blame. The replays also showed that Rohit didn't put his head down and run straight up, in fact he kept watching the ball in between which hampered his pace. The bat getting stuck was unfortunate though. Anyway, Sri Lanka have their first wicket! 23/1

Sharma is blinded there and both the batsmen are in the middle. They still manage to complete the single easily as the ball was a bit far from the fielder after the stop. Phew!
