  • The bowling was good for Sri Lanka for the most part of the game. Lahiru Gamage led from the front, registering his best figures in ODIs. He was well backed up by the rest as they never allowed the hosts to get away. Thisara Perera chipped in with a vital spell, taking 2/34. The Islanders will back themselves to chase this total but the hosts are not yet out of the game. They have the bowling attack to defend this. Will they do it? Let's see. Join us for the chase in a while.
  • A commendable effort by Pakistan! They won the toss, elected to bat first but the move almost backfired on them when they were reduced to 101 for 6. The batting was poor against some really disciplined bowling. It was only thanks to a sensible stand between Babar Azam and Shadab Khan that they have managed to post this total on the board. Both batsmen did not repeat the mistakes of the top order who didn't apply themselves on this slow wicket. Azam scored his second ton in as many games and showed his class. He was given really good support by Khan, who chipped in with his maiden fifty.
  • 49.6 Length delivery in line of the stumps, Khan backs away and flat-bats it to long on for a run. PAKISTAN FINISH ON 219/9.
  • Junaid Khan is the last man in for Pakistan.
  • 49.5 OUT! Raees holes out! High full toss, Raees heaves it towards deep mid-wicket. Dananjaya lines it up and takes it. The umpires check for the height of the ball. It is below the waist and hence, a legal delivery. Raees has to go back.
  • Rumman Raees is the new man in.
  • 49.4 OUT! Brilliant work, Akila! High full toss on off, Ali miscues his heave over mid-wicket. Dananjaya runs in from the deep and collects it on the bounce. The batsmen go for the second, the fielder fires an accurate throw at the striker's end and hits the bull's eye. It is referred upstairs. Seems to be touch and go. The replays show that Hasan is just short of his crease.
  • There is a run out appeal against Hasan Ali. It's a direct hit and those are always close. Over to the third umpire now...
  • 49.3 SIX! Boom! That came right from the screws! Slower delivery on a length on leg stump, Ali clears his front leg and slogs it over deep mid-wicket for a maximum.
  • 49.2 Khan flat-bats this length delivery to mid on for a run.
  • Hasan Ali comes out to bat.
  • 49.1 OUT! End of a terrific knock from Azam! Take a bow, champion! Full toss on off, Azam looks to clear long on but doesn't get it off the meat of the bat. Kusal Mendis near the fence takes an easy catch. Babar gets a rousing applause from the crowd. It can turn out to be a match-winning knock for his side.
  • 48.6 Clips the full delivery to the leg side for a run. 210/6

  • 45.1 A loud shout for an LBW denied! On a fullish length on middle and off, Azam looks to clip it away but seems to have got an inside edge towards short fine leg. • Toss - Pakistan win the toss and opt to bat. Both sides remain unchanged. A bit of insight into how the track is expected to play - Like a typical UAE wicket, it will slow down as the game progresses. It will be good for strokeplay initially.
  • On the other hand, the tourists have had a horrid time in the limited-overs format. They have lost 8 matches on the trot. Massive improvement in all departments is the need of the hour if they are to lead a fightback. Their young star, Kusal Mendis needs to rise to the occasion. Expect a cracker!
  • Hello and a warm welcome to the coverage of the 2nd ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi. The home side came back with a bang in the first game after a 2-0 defeat in the Test series. It was a complete performance from them proving that they can be ominous on their day. They are on a roll at the moment, having won their last five matches in this format.
  • We've come to the end of this exciting encounter. Both teams leave this game with contrasting fates - Pakistan win their 5th match on the trot while Sri Lanka lost their 9th in a row. One on the up, the other facing a spiral in the other direction. Some positives from this match for the Lankans, but plenty more to work on. And they must rather quickly. The 3rd ODI takes place at this same venue on 18th October at 1500 local (1100 GMT). Do join us for all the action. Till then, cheers!
  • On shouting at his players, Sarfraz Ahmed replies that his boys understand him and such was the match situation. Smiles and says that he apologizes later. Admits that the batting flopped and credits Shadab Khan and Babar Azam for their batting. Showers praise on all his bowlers. He is confident that Azam will come good in Test cricket as well. Feels that batting second ain't easy as the pitch slows down in the second half and hence in spite of all the dew, bowling first was a good call. Further adds that they will see the conditions for the next match and decide whether to bat first or second.
  • Upul Tharanga says his bowlers bowled really well to keep Pakistan to 219. States if they hanged in there they could have done it. Credits the seam bowlers for bowling really well and also applauds Akila Dananjaya and Jeffrey Vandersay for their performances with the ball. Is just disappointed not to win. Mentions Vandersay batted really well to support him, but it was a tough task. On being the only Sri Lankan to carry his bat through in an ODI, with a melancholy sound in his voice he says it's a good moment for him, but is disappointed to lose the game.
  • Shadab Khan receives the Man of the Match award for his all-round contribution. He is all smiles and says that he wanted to perform with the bat and help the team. Adds that the plan was to play the full quota of 50 overs. Also praises his bowling partners and says that they were confident of winning. Aims to be the Player of the Series and feels that his captain uses him as per the situation.
  • With a target then of 220, Sri Lanka suffered a similar fate to the hosts. Reduced to 93/7, with Shadab Khan's 3-fer leading the attack and almost everyone chipping in with wickets, all hope seemed lost. But, captain Upul Tharanga led from the front and took the game deep. He had more than his fair share of luck, was dropped twice, but he still had to make the most of it and he almost did. His partnership consisting of 76 with Jeffrey Vandersay brought some life back into the game, and the skipper completed his hundred as well, but the Islanders eventually fell short when the partnership was broken. Upul Tharanga remained not out throughout the entire innings, and with that, became the 1st Sri Lankan and first Lankan captain to carry his bat through in an ODI. A bittersweet feeling for him, more bitter than sweet surely. He'll feel hard done he couldn't get his team over the line. Stay tuned for the presentation coming up...
  • What should have been a one-sided contest, ironically, for both sides at one stage, turned into a real crackerjack of a contest! At the beginning, when Pakistan opted to bat first, they suffered a major collapse courtesy Lahiru Gamage's outstanding 4-wicket haul and it seemed like Sri Lanka would rap them up rather quickly. But Babar Azam, along with Shadab Khan, shored things up and somehow enabled Pakistan to see the entire 50-over quota out. The former scored a mature, skillful ton while the latter stroked a mature fifty. The 109-run stand gave a fighting platform for Pakistan to battle on.
  • 47.6 OUT! Gamage is run out and it's all over for Sri Lanka. Full toss outside off, Lahiru whacks it square of the wicket on the off side and attempts for the second run. The fielder from the deep fires in a direct hit at the striker's end as Gamage attempts to dive back in. The keeper appeals and the square leg umpire goes upstairs. The replays roll in and Gamage is nowhere in the frame. But there is some confusion. Sarfraz seems to have disturbed the stumps with his gloves. The third umpire wants to be 100 percent sure here. He watches multiple replays and then finds that the bails didn't come off when Sarfraz made contact with the stumps. Other than that, it was a pretty straightforward decision. OUT flashes on the giant screen and PAKISTAN WIN BY 32 RUNS!
  • Direct hit at the striker's end! Could be that Sarfraz knocked the stumps with his gloves before the ball crashed into the stumps. Can't tell in real time. Going to have to wait for the replays.

  • 47.3 Too full in length outside off, Tharanga makes room and squeezes it behind point for a couple of runs.

  • 46.5 Almost a great catch by Junaid! A clever slower delivery by Raees, Tharanga is early into the pull shot and as a result gets a top edge. It balloons in the air, Khan runs forward from short fine leg and attempts to catch it with a dive. But it falls just short. They cross for a run.
  • 46.4 Appeal for a catch! Not given by the umpire. A little short in length and angling down the leg side, Tharanga swings and misses. There is some deflection as it goes to the keeper and they appeal. The umpire remains unmoved. Maybe, it went off the thigh pad.

In the meanwhile, an accurate throw comes in from the deep by Shehzad and Sarfraz does the rest. Lakmal is short of the crease. Sri Lanka lose another wicket. Poor Tharanga, cannot even celebrate his 15th ODI ton. Bittersweet feeling. What a knock from him but he is running out of partners. Only one left and 48 more to win.

  • Suranga Lakmal next in.
  • 44.5 OUT! Raees breaks the threatening partnership. He digs in a short ball around leg, 119 kph, rising onto the batsman who attempts to pull it into the stands. • Kusal Mendis strides out at No. 3. Can the youngster put his hand up and accept the challenge?
  • 2.2 OUT! DICKWELLA IS GONE! Huge wicket for Pakistan, he's just the man they wanted. Junaid Khan with an absolute beauty as he swings this one back in from outside off, it keeps a little low too and this does Dickwella in. He swings hard across the line, only for the ball to sneak under the bat and strike him on the pads. He's caught flush in front of the stumps and the umpire has no trouble to raise his finger. The hosts are pumped.

  • 1.2 Excellent line! On a good length in the off stump channel, a hint of away movement as Dickwella leaves it alone. This is good bowling from Raees, going to be a challenge for Niroshan to not tempt himself to playing these.

Shadab has a shy at the bowler's end which misses otherwise Niroshan would have got into a spot of bother. The replays confirm that there was an inside edge.
  • 0.3 Back of a length outside off, punched off the back foot to covers.
