  • The Pakistan bowling looked flat to begin with. Their bowlers did not get a lot of assistance from the surface and the dropped catch of Williamson also did not help their cause. Their spinner, Shadab Khan was also not at his best and hence they are now chasing a total which is just above par I feel. Their batsmen will have to bat out of their skins if they are to chase a target as it won't be easy against a brilliant Kiwi bowling attack. Will we see the away side being blow away or will they manage to spring in a surprise? Join us for the chase in a while.
  • Another excellent batting performance by New Zealand. After being put into bat, they will be mighty pleased. The pair of Guptill and Munro first got them off to a flier with a latter scoring a breezy half century. But this innings was all about Williamson, their skipper, who walked out after Munro's wicket and bagged a ton to his name. He was given a life early in his innings but never looked back after that. He was well supported by Martin first and then by Nicholls who himself notched up a more than a run-a-ball 50.
  • 49.6 FOUR! A great way to end the innings for New Zealand! Southee was lucky but he wont mind. Amir bowls it full on off, Southee tries to flick but gets an inside edge through fine leg for a boundary. 9 runs from the final over and NEW ZEALAND FINISH ON 315-7!
  • TODD ASTLE walks out at no. 9.
  • 49.5 OUT! In the air...caught! Santner had to go for it and he perishes in trying to hit a big one. Amir bowls it on a length around middle, Santner pulls, he connects well enough, gets the elevation but not the distance and holes out to Raees at deep mid-wicket.
  • 49.4 Just back of a length on middle, Santner tries to pull but gets a bottom edge to the keeper. 2 balls to go.
  • 49.3 FOUR! WOW! There was nothing wrong with the ball there. A very full delivery, almost a yorker on leg stump. Santner somehow manages to flick it through mid-wicket for a boundary,
  • 49.2 Just one off the first two balls. Southee drives the full ball down to long off for a run.
  • 49.1 Southee shuffles across. Amir uses his angle and bowls it full outside off. Southee fails to connect. A dot to begin the last over.
  • MOHAMMED AMIR to bowl the last over of the innings.
  • 48.6 The batsman plays a pull shot to this short delivery. One run added to the total. Hasan finishes with figures off 10-0-61-3. He was expensive but did take three wickets. 306/6
  • 48.5 Full on off, driven down towards long on for a couple.

An enterprising innings by Henry comes to an end.
  • 47.6 The batsman plays a pull shot to this short delivery. They manage to come back for the second. 297/5

  • MICTHELL SANTNER is the next man in.
  • 47.2 OUT! CAUGHT! They don't drop Williamson this time. Hasan Ali has made this skier look really easy. Raees bowls another slower ball outside off, Williamson makes room and tries to go big but ends up hitting it straight up in the air towards point. Hasan Ali positions himself under it and takes it by diving forward. Not easy those at would have been swirling in the air. Nevertheless an outstanding innings by Williamson comes to an end. • 45.4 Uppish, in no mans land! A slower bouncer by Raees outside off, Williamson makes room and tries to pull it over long on. He does not time it and it lobs towards mid-wicket where there is no fielder and the batsmen take two.

  • 43.5 One run shy of a hundred! Amir bowls it on a length on off, Williamson cuts it towards point but this time only for one.
  • 43.4 NOT OUT! How quick is Williamson. He cuts the short ball towards point. He completes a run and then calls for a second. The fielder in the deep, picks the ball up and fires a throw to the keeper who whips the bails off and appeals. Williamson looks like he has made it but the umpire just to be sure goes upstairs. Replays show that Kane was well in. He moves onto 98.
  • They have gone upstairs to check for a run out appeal against Williamson at the striker's end. He seems to be safe but just to be sure.

  • 17.1 Outside off, Williamson feels for it but misses.
  • 16.6 The batsman defends it from within the crease. 100/1
  • 16.5 That is a sharp bouncer. Outside off, Martin takes his eyes off the ball as he looks to defend but the ball keeps on rising and hits his glove.

  • 16.3 A length ball outside off, extra bounce, pushed through the covers for a single. 100 IS UP...

  • 12.4 The batsman has attempted to put bat on ball - but fails.
  • KANE WILLIAMSON walks in at number 3, replacing Munro.
  • 12.3 OUT! Munro departs! 'Told ya, didn't I?' I am not saying that but Sarfraz' reaction seemed to suggest that. The world's numero uno bowler strikes. A length ball outside off, Munro looks to flay it through the off side but can only nick it behind to Sarfraz who completes the formalities and then signals towards the bowler as if giving a practical explanation of the theory discussed a ball before. Munro falls for 58, perhaps a century was there for the taking.
  • 12.2 FOUR! Wrong line, down the leg side and Munro is too good a batsman to miss out. Tickles it to the fine leg fence. Sarfraz runs to his bowler and has a long chat.
  • 12.1 SIX! In the air... sails over! Yet another half century for Munro. His 5th in ODIs. He is looking ominous now. A length ball outside off, Munro pulls this high in the air but the timing is not that great. Mid-wicket at the fence thinks he has a chance but the wind pushes the ball beyond the ropes.

  • HASAN ALI now comes on.
  • POWERPLAY 2 has been signalled. Upto 4 fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle for the next 30 overs.
  • 9.6 Nothing. Just a forward press to end the over. 15 from the over, New Zealand end Powerplay 1 on 62/0! 62/0
  • 9.5 SIX! 'Are you kidding me?' asks Ian Smith on air. What a shot. This is called toying with the bowling. Full and outside off, Munro gets down and literally sweeps it, yes, sweeps it and gets it over mid-wicket! What is up for the final ball?
  • 9.4 FOUR! Intentional. Short and wide outside off, Munro slashes this over point and gets consecutive boundaries to his name!
  • 9.3 FOUR! AUDACIOUS! A short ball outside off, Munro pulls it over wide mid on, one bounce and into the fence! The 50-RUN STAND is up in quick time and New Zealand are looking to push on.
  • 9.2 Down the leg side, Guptill misses out. Fine leg was inside the circle and a slight touch on that would have taken the ball to the boundary. Martin tries to flick but the ball hits his thighs and goes wide of short fine leg. JUst a leg bye.
  • 9.1 Full and around off, swinging in a touch, watchfully defended.
  • What happened there? Hasan Ali was originally scheduled to bowl but at the last moment, Rumman gets the ball back.
  • 8.6 Full again, flicked again, but not with great timing. A couple through mid-wicket. 47/0
  • 8.5 Full and outside off, punched straight to Hasan Ali at mid off.
  • 8.4 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 8.3 FOUR! Plenty of real estate out there and Munro just utilizes that. A half volley on middle and leg and there is only one man in that region, around square leg. Flicked through mid-wicket with outstanding timing.
  • 8.2 Landed outside off, defende from the crease.
  • 8.1 Full on middle, flicked through mid-wicket for a couple.

  • 7.4 WIDE. Frustration from the bowler, bangs it in the middle of the pitch but down the leg side. Martin ducks and the umpire signals one bouncer for the over.
  • 7.4 WIDE. Oh dear... comic scenes out in the middle. Raees bowls this down the leg side and Martin looks to flick. He misses it and as the ball goes past, a noise occurs. Sarfraz collects and appeals and the umpire signals a wide! Sarfraz is not happy. He is frustrated to no end on that wide call. Replays show the bat hitting the pad. Perhaps it was a wide after all.
  • 7.3 A short ball now, pulled through the leg side for a single.
  • 7.2 Fullish on middle, driven through mid on where Mohammad Amir dives to his right and parries the ball away. Two runs taken.
  • 7.1 Outside off, pushed through point for a single.
  • 6.6 Landed outside off, now Guptill steers this behind point for a run. 31/0
  • 6.5 Outside off, punched through point for a single. The stand is now worth 30 from 41 balls.
  • Second slip has now been moved to cover.
  • 6.4 Outside off, punched towards cover.
  • 6.3 Full and outside off, pushed straight to mid off.
  • 6.2 FOUR! Terrific timing. Badly lined, bowling this too straight, down the leg side, Munro just helps it behind square leg and gets a boundary!
  • 6.1 That is a fine shot. Landed outside off, comes back in a long way, Munro is caught in his crease as he looks to flick and is hit on the pads. Perhaps height was the issue as no one appealed.
  • 5.6 Outside off, punched straight to cover. 25/0
  • 5.5 The batsman works it down the leg side. They pick up a single.
  • 5.4 Down the leg side, flicked through the leg side for a single.
  • 5.3 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.

  • And again... the bails come off! Eventually, common sense has prevailed and the bails have now been taken off.
  • 5.1 A short ball outside off, Munro pulls it with disdain but Sarfraz has a man exactly for that shot, at deep square leg. A single taken.
  • More issues with the wind as the bails keep falling off at the bowler's end. Not in anyone's control, but might be better off if they play without those bails.
  • 4.6 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. 22/0
  • 4.5 Yorker outside off, Martin digs it out.

  • 3.5 Played to the point region by the batsman. One run added to the total.
  • 3.4 Outside off, left alone.
  • 3.3 Full and outside off, watchfully defended.
  • It is pretty blustery out there. The bails at the bowler's end come off and the umpire is putting them back on.
  • 3.2 SIX! ADMONISHED! Guptill is coming to the party today. Munro is not quite able to tee off but not a worry as long Guptill has his lorry ready. A length ball on middle, Guptill lofts this through the line and hits it as straight as an arrow, right back over the bowler and all the way over long on!
  • 3.1 Landed outside off, angling away, left alone.
  • 2.6 The batsman has flicked the ball off his pads. They manage to come back for the second. 15/0

  • 2.2 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.

  • 1.5 A full toss outside off, swinging in, Munro looks to drive, then tries to flick, manages neither and is comprehensively beaten. The ball goes under the bat.
  • 1.4 Full and outside off, Guptill drives this through the covers and picks up three.
  • 1.3 Fuller on middle, chipped uppishly towards mid on.
  • 1.2 Full and wide outside off, left alone. Waqar Younis on air reckons that the ball should swing back in but the ball just goes away with the angle. Waqar is surprised...
  • 1.1 LEADING EDGE... SAFE! Lucky escape for Munro. Has he signed a contract with Lady Luck or something? We saw this plenty of times in the Windies series. Pakistan will hope it does not get carried forward like an employee's annual leaves. Full and outside off, swinging in, Munro is early into his flick and gets a leading edge which goes wide of mid off. A single taken and New Zealand are on the board.
  • RUMMAN RAEES to bowl from the other end with the second new ball. Two left-arm seamers to begin with...
  • 0.6 That is a good probing maiden from Amir. This is just outside off, pretty full, angling away, Martin watchfully lets it through. 0/0
  • 0.5 Full and outside off, a touch wide, shouldered arms to.
  • 0.4 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 0.3 This time makes the batsman play and Martin is solid in defense.
  • 0.2 The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • 0.1 Nice ball first up. On a length outside off, Guptill lets it go through with the angle. Nice carry to the keeper.
  • MOHAMMAD AMIR to start off the tour. Martin Guptill and Colin Munro are the openers with the former to take strike. Here we go...
  • The anthems are over and it is now game time. Pakistan look a pumped up lot. The Kiwi openers on the other hand, look calm and composed. Kane Williamson wanted to bat first anyways, so both captains have got what they wanted, unless Williamson is bluffing, which does not look like it, given his gentle nature.
  • Time for the national anthems. Pakistan's one being played first.
  • Playing XI - Pakistan - Azhar Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Sarfraz Ahmed(w/c), Faheem Ashraf, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali and Rumman Raees.
  • Playing XI - New Zealand - Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson(c), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham(w), Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Todd Astle, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson and Trent Boult.
  • TOSS - Sarfraz Ahmed calls it correctly and PAKISTAN WILL BOWL. The big guns are back for the Kiwis from a well-deserved rest.
  • It was heavily overcast an hour before but now the clouds have gone by, giving place to bright sunshine. But still, heavy showers are predicted, so fingers crossed.
  • If you thought cricket in New Zealand was over, don't be so sure. The Kiwi-Windies series was just the beginning of a longggg home season for the Black Caps. They now get set to host Pakistan for a limited-overs series which will be followed by the English competition. Phew! Plenty of cricket in this small country! Hello and a warm welcome to the first of the 5-match ODI series between New Zealand and Pakistan at the Basin Reserve, Wellington.
  • KANE WILLIAMSON has been named the Man Of The Match for his superlative century. It has helped break Pakistan's winning streak of 9 successive ODI wins, from the first match loss to India in the Champions Trophy in 2017. The next stop is now Nelson, where the Kiwis will aim to double the series lead while the visitors will look to do better in all departments. Do join us for that game on Tuesday, 9th January, 2018 at 1100 LOCAL (2200 GMT, previous night) for all the action from the second ODI. Till then, you can catch all the action from the first SA-Ind Test and the final Ashes Test. ADIOS! Take Care!
  • One might not be totally wrong if it is said that the chase was perhaps over in the first 16 overs itself when Pakistan had lost half their side. Fakhar Zaman was the only batsman who showed some resilience while Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf seemed to indicate that the batting depth of the team is pretty deep. But in short, a disappointing performance with the bat.
  • Yet another dominating win for New Zealand then. They did not have much problems with the bat and though Pakistan might argue that things could have been different had Kane Williamson's catch been taken, the hosts always looked in control. The top 3 batted well and then Nicholls came down the order for a late burst. Pakistan were disappointing with the ball and largely struggled with the wind. Hasan Ali though, still picked up 3 scalps.
  • That is it. PLAY HAS BEEN CALLED OFF. New Zealand have been declared winners by 61 runs (DLS method). Not to suggest that Pakistan would have won this had the game gone the distance but the fightback shown by Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf was heartening. They would have loved to take the game into the final 10 overs.
  • Still no news of resumption.... the covers are firmly in place...
  • Noooooooooooooooo! The rain is back and so are the covers. Keep waiting...
  • Hurrah! The players are back on the field! That was hardly a delay, wasn't it? No overs lost, so Pakistan still have the entire quota of overs to bat....
  • 1735 LOCAL - And off they go... the umpires have been trying to delay the inevitable for as long as possible but the rain has just got very heavy for play to continue. Not too many covers on at the moment, just the single one. It does look very heavy, the rain that is. Stay tuned for updates. Hopefully, we have a resumption...
  • 30.1 Around middle and off, watchfully defended.
  • The rain seems to be getting heavier. The umpires do get together but are happy with the current situation. Pakistan may not want to go off the field right now... they have some sort of a momentum and if they go off now, they will end up losing the game by Duckworth-Lewis method.
  • 29.6 That is a better single. Pushed to point. 166/6
  • 29.5 On middle and leg, Faheem wants to push and run to the leg side but Zaman sends him back.
  • 29.4 SIX! High and handsome! Tossed up outside off and this time Ashraf does not block. Lunges and lofts this straight back over the bowler and clears long off!
  • 29.3 The arm ball, slides this one through, with the angle, FA looks to defend but the ball whizzes past the outside edge.
  • 29.2 Full again, a bit flatter and quicker this time, Faheem gets across and blocks.

  • MITCHELL SANTNER is back on.
  • 28.6 Another short ball, this is not wided. 158/6

  • 28.5 Now the short ball is back and Faheem pulls it behind square leg for a single.
  • 28.4 FOUR! GORGEOUS! This guy can definitely bat. Full on middle, expected overcompensation for the previous delivery and Ashraf is ready for it. Boy, does he think like a batsman... pushes this down the ground, past the bowler, through mid on and gets consecutive boundaries against his name.
  • 28.3 FOUR! A short ball, Ashraf pulls this through mid-wicket and gets another boundary!
  • 28.2 Very full, on middle, worked through square leg for a single.
  • 28.1 FOUR! Poor ball. Third man and point are inside the circle and Boult drops it short and wide outside off. Zaman cuts it between short third man and backward point for a boundary. Moves to 81 from 84 balls with his 5th boundary. He deserves that 100.
  • 27.6 Pushes this through mid off for a run. 11 from the over. 143/6
  • 27.5 A length ball around leg, Fakhar looks to steer it behind point but misses.
  • 27.4 The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot. They pick up a single.
  • 27.3 Full and wide outside off, driven wide of mid off for a run.
  • 27.2 Now this is banged short and Fakhar pulls it through mid-wicket for a couple.
  • 27.1 SIX! Zaman continues to play his shots. Short and wide outside off, Zaman slashes hard and gets it all the way over the point fence.
  • 26.6 DROPPED! Almost two in two for Boult! A length ball outside off, Ashraf pushes at it but the ball holds off the surface and lobs towards extra cover. Mitchell Santner dives forward but cannot hang on to the catch. Toughie... 132/6
  • FAHEEM ASHRAF walks in next, at number 8, replacing Shadab. His profile suggests that he can bat a bit...
  • 26.5 OUT! Gone this time. Trent Boult has struck. A purposeful short ball at the head of the batsman, Shadab instinctively goes for the pull but gets a top edge. The ball goes up in the air but has not gone far. Tom Latham runs back a few yards and takes it comfortably. A decent 78-run stand ends. Some respectability to the Pakistan total.
  • 26.4 Full and wide outside off, squeezed uppishly past cover for one.
  • 26.3 Another pull shot, uppish, but does not carry to the man at deep mid-wicket. A run results.
  • 26.2 A short ball on middle, pulled ferociously but straight to deep mid-wicket for just a single.
  • The rain is getting quite heavy now...
  • 26.1 Full and outside off, pushed straight to cover.
  • TRENT BOULT back into the attack.
  • 25.6 FOUR! Terrific shot. A short ball outside off, once again Shadab leaps and cuts it over point for a boundary! 129/5
  • 25.6 WIDE. Excellent take from Tom Latham. Ferguson slips this down the leg side and SK misses his flick. Superman Latham flies to his left to take it cleanly.
  • 25.5 Full and outside off, Khan pushes at it but lack of footwork induces an inside edge which nearly hits the stumps.
  • 25.4 FOUR! Nicely played. He was anticipating the short delivery and when it came, he was ready. Jumped and cut it over point, wide of third man and into the boundary. Moves to 23 from 28 balls with his third boundary while the stand is worth 70 from 59 balls.

  • A man comes under the lid at short leg now. Bouncers on the menu?
  • 24.6 SIX! Clean hitting! Floated outside off, Zaman comes down the track but since the ball is thrown wide, he has to reach out for it. Goes through with the shot and manages to clear Colin Munro at wide long off. Moves to 64 from 74 balls with his third biggie and the stand is worth 64 from 56 balls. 118/5
  • 24.5 Short and outside off, too wide, slapped through the covers for a run.
  • 24.4 On middle and off, Shadab lunges to defend but the ball goes off the inside edge towards short fine leg.
  • 24.3 On leg and outside, pushed past the diving bowler towards long on for a single.
  • 24.2 Similar ball, dabbed to the off side.
  • 24.1 Tossed up outside off, pushed back to the bowler.
  • Another delay. We have had plenty of delays today. Due to the wind, due to a collision, sightscreen and now, due to some issue to a player. Shadab Khan was hit on the glove in the previous over and has called the doctor in the middle for some treatment. And amidst this break, IT HAS STARTED TO DRIZZLE...
  • 23.6 Outside off, pushed through point for a run. 110/5
  • 23.5 The batsman has flicked the ball off his pads. They pick up a single.

Moves to 42 from 53 balls. The stand is worth 24 from 17 balls.
