  • England will not to be too happy with the final total after electing to bat. The conditions were tough and apart from Root and Stokes, none of the other batsmen showed the desire to weather the storm. Had West Indies not dropped so many catches, things would have been even worse for them. Now the onus is on their bowlers to perform on a pitch which has a plenty of juice. Let's see how West Indies respond...
  • Great bowling effort by the Windies! Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel delivered the goods on a pitch which is providing a lot of assistance to the seamers. Both the pacers bagging four wickets each, helping the visitors to bowl out the hosts for a moderate total.
  • 70.5 OUT! So they wrap up things quickly. Roach gets his fourth. He serves a short delivery outside off, Woakes tries to work it down to third man but gets an outside edge to Dowrich who makes no mistake this time. ENGLAND HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 258!
  • 70.4 Fuller on off, Woakes drives it to mid off.
  • 70.3 Tad shorter outside off, Woakes tries to guide it down to third man but gets a bottom edge.
  • 70.2 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 70.1 Good length outside off, Woakes lets it through to the keeper.
  • 69.6 Lands it on a length outside off, Anderson allows it through to the keeper. A double-wicket maiden! 258/9
  • James Anderson is the last batsman.
  • 69.5 OUT! Boom, right through the gate! Gabriel does it all by himself. Hurls across a toe-crushing yorker, right in the blockhole, too quick for Broad to dig it out and it goes on to rattle the stumps.
  • 69.4 The batsman defends it from within the crease.
  • 69.3 DROPPED AGAIN! How many more are the West Indian players going to drop? Length ball on off angling away, Broad tries to defend but gets an outside edge straight to the keeper who drops a sitter. Poor by the keeper that should have been gobbled. Gabriel cannot believe it.
  • 69.2 Stuart Broad the new man in, receives a short ball on off, he does well to defend it off the back foot.
  • 69.1 OUT! They finally hang onto one. The bowling change has worked again. Gabriel who dropped him earlier has got his man. He bangs it short on middle, Stokes goes for the pull but it takes the edge and goes to the keeper who takes a good catch going to his left. The players appeal and Ben starts walking. He gets a sendoff from Shannon on his way but a brilliant innings from him nonetheless. He walks off to a standing ovation from the crowd. Has done his part. England are 8 down now. Can they get to 300?
  • Shannon Gabriel gets back into the attack, the captain finally realizes that Roston Chase is not doing a good job, chuckles Michael Holding on-air.
  • 68.6 Edged but short! Who wants to be Kemar Roach? I surely don't want to be in his place. Nothing going his way. Another edge induced but it has fallen short of first slip. A speechless Roach takes his cap and walks away. Not your day, mate! 258/7
  • 68.5 FOUR! What an asset to have batting at number 9! Short delivery angling into the batsman, Woakes swivels and helps his pull shot over backward square leg for a boundary.
  • 68.4 Shortish and wide outside off, Woakes cuts it straight to point.
  • 68.3 Angling into the batsman, Woakes stands back in defense.
  • 68.2 A little bit of room outside off, Woakes plays it down with an angled bat and it goes off the outer half to gully, on one bounce though.
  • 68.1 Fuller in length on off, driven off the front foot to mid off.
  • Drinks break.
  • 67.6 Plays it with the angle towards mid-wicket for a run. 254/7
  • Michael Holding is furious with Jason Holder's tactics. He makes a valid point that the main spinner, Devendra Bishoo has just bowled six overs today while the part-timer Roston Chase keeps on bowling in spite of being expensive. Fair point. Hard to understand this ploy!
  • 67.5 Drags his length back outside off, Woakes gets it past the slip fielder and the ball races away.
  • 67.4 Floats it on off, Woakes drives it back to the bowler.
  • 67.3 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 67.2 FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries. Shorter outside off, Woakes plays it through short third man for a boundary.
  • 67.1 FOUR! Fires it down the leg side, Woakes tickles it fine down the leg side for a boundary.
  • 66.6 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. 241/7
  • 6th Test hundred for Ben Stokes.
  • 66.5 HUNDRED FOR STOKES! He has been dropped twice, but take nothing away form this knock. Brilliant attacking display by him. Roach lands it on a length outside off, Stokes drives it through covers and runs two. He is all smiles as he raises his bat. Top knock from a top batsman!
  • 66.4 DROPPED! Stokes has another reprieve. You could see this coming, he was getting a bit fidgety. Roach bowls a fuller ball on off, Stokes walks down the track and tries to club it over mid on but hits it straight to Gabriel who is stationed there. Shannon gets two hands to it but can't hold onto it. Ben Stokes will breathe a sigh of a relief. Kemar stands a frustrated figure. You have to feel for him as he has bowled his heart out and not gotten support from his fielders.
  • 66.3 Almost an edge there. Bowls it full and wide outside off, Stokes goes after it but does not connect.
  • 66.2 Length outside off, Stokes goes hard at it but hits it straight to the man at covers.
  • 66.1 Lands it on a length outside off, comes back into the batsman. Stokes watchfully lets it through to the keeper.
  • 65.6 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 239/7
  • 65.5 Sprays on the pads, Woakes tries to flick it but misses as the ball brushes the pads and it goes down to fine leg for two leg byes.
  • 65.4 Bowls an arm ball on off, Stokes pushes it through covers for a run.
  • 65.3 Fires it on off, Stokes lunges forward and defends it.
  • 65.2 Bowls it outside off, Stokes opts to not play at it.
  • 65.1 Flatter on off, turning away. Stokes defends it watchfully.

  • 64.5 A tad short outside off, Stokes cuts it to deep point to change strike.
  • 64.4 Fuller ball outside off, Stokes eases it straight to covers. He would feel he missed out there. That was right in his arc.
  • 64.3 On the shorter side on off, Stokes pushes it to mid off.
  • 64.2 Bangs in a short one on middle, Stokes plays a short-arm jab through mid-wicket and the batsmen run two. A boundary away now.

  • 63.6 Floats it on middle, Woakes flicks it uppishly towards mid on. 233/7
  • 63.5 Loopy ball on off, Woakes drives it to mid off.
  • 63.4 The batsman defends it from within the crease.
  • 63.3 FOUR! Poor from Chase. Fast hands from Chris Woakes. Drags his length back outside off, Woakes goes back and waits for the ball as he cuts it late past the backward point fielder and into the fence.
  • 63.2 Flatter outside off, the batsman opts not to play at it.

  • Chris Woakes strides out to the middle. England bat too deep.
  • 60.2 OUT! The bowling change has worked wonders. This is exactly the way Moeen Ali got out against South Africa recently. Fuller ball outside off, Moeen drives it but fails to keep it down and it goes straight to Roston Chase at point who takes a nice catch. Kemar provides a crucial breakthrough as this stand was looking dangerous. Can they wrap up things quickly now?
  • 60.1 Fuller outside off, Moeen times it to covers.
  • Kemar Roach is back into the attack. The Windies are in a desperate need of a wicket here.
  • 59.6 Tosses it up outside off, Ali drives it through covers for a run. 220/6
  • 59.5 FOUR! Picked the length very early there! Quicker and shorter on off, Moeen Ali rocks back and pulls it through mid-wicket for a boundary. Runs coming thick and fast here.
  • 59.4 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 59.3 Drags his length back on off, Moeen pushes it to covers.
  • 59.2 Floats it outside off, Ali drives it straight to the man at covers.

  • 55.3 How has that missed the stumps? Stokes is riding his luck. Bowls it on off, turning away. Stokes tries to defend it but gets an inside edge that goes just past the leg stump and down towards fine leg. Blackwood from slip hares after it and keeps it down to two.

  • We're back for the third session. The players and the umpires are out in the middle. Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali will continue their innings. Jason Holder will start the proceedings after the break for the Windies.
  • ...Day 1, Session 3...
  • The Englishmen still have some batting to come and they will look to add as many runs as possible to the total. The tourists would want to pick the remaining wickets quickly and restrict the English side under 200, if possible. Join us in a while for the third and the final session.
  • 24 overs, 95 runs and three wickets. This session swung like a pendulum. The Windies started off really well after picking the wicket of Dawid Malan but the free-flowing partnership between Stokes and Root helped shift the momentum back towards the hosts. A lapse in concentration and a false shot by the latter led to his downfall and then the wicket of Bairstow tilted the momentum towards the visitors.
  • 49.6 Full on leg stump, Ali flicks it through mid-wicket for a couple. TEA ON DAY 1! 156/6
  • 49.5 Bowls a well-directed bouncer. Moeen Ali does well to duck under it.

  • 49.3 Good length, angling across the batsman. Ali tries to poke it but gets beaten.
  • 49.2 Lands it on a length on middle, Ali works it to mid-wicket from the crease.
  • 49.1 In the air... but safe! Stokes will continue playing his shots. Shannon bangs it in short on middle, Ben takes on the challenge to pull but the ball gets big on him. He gets a top edge which goes over the slip cordon. Jason Holder from second slip gives it a chase but is unable to reach there. The batsmen complete a run.

  • 47.3 Length outside off, the batsman shoulders his arms to it.
  • Moeen Ali is the next man in.
  • 47.2 OUT! A puzzled Jonny Bairstow is walking back. He does not like it, neither does the crowd as they both felt that the ball had hit the ground. Shannon bowls it on a length around off, seaming away from the batsman. Bairstow tries to play at it with firm hands but gets an outside edge to Jason Holder at second slip who takes a good low catch and appeals. Jonny stands his ground as he feels the catch is not clean. After a chat, the umpires go upstairs and replays show that there is not enough evidence to overturn the soft signal which was out. It's touch and go, and Jonny has to go. Gabriel gets his second and this is yet another big wicket for the Windies.
  • The umpires are going upstairs to check whether Jason Holder has taken the catch cleanly at second slip. The soft signal is out. Holder looks quite confident. Let's see...
  • 47.1 Back of a length outside off, Bairstow chops it to point.
  • 46.6 Slower through the air around off, stays low a touch. Stokes camps back and tries to force it on the off side but gets an inside edge onto his pads. 152/5
  • A good observation being made by Sir Ian Botham on-air. He feels that Jason Holder has been a reactive captain so far. Brings out the instance of Kemar Roach's spell where he induced an outside edge off Stokes' bat but the catch was dropped. After that a boundary was hit and Holder just followed the ball. As a result, there was one less fielder in the slip cordon through which another edge went for a boundary. Fair point, Beefy. You cannot be restless as a captain. Patience is the mother of all virtues!
  • 46.5 Drags his length back outside off, Bairstow cuts it through the cover region for a run.
  • 46.4 Flighted ball on off, Jonny lunges forward and defends it.
  • 46.3 Floats it on off, Bairstow drives it beautifully to covers.

  • 45.5 FOUR! Poor length! Short and outside off, Stokes cuts it through point and the ball races to the fence. Any width on offer and Stokes will go after it.

  • 45.3 Back of a length on off, Stokes gets it off the inner half towards mid-wicket.
  • 45.2 OUCH! That must have hurt! Good length on leg stump, Stokes misses the flick and gets hit on the thigh. He goes down holding that part but he is a strong man and will continue playing.
  • 45.1 A tad shorter on leg stump, Bairstow tucks it towards square leg for a run.
  • Shannon Gabriel is back into the attack.
  • 44.6 Fuller outside off, Stokes drives it square on the off side for two. 146/5
  • 44.5 Lands it on a length outside off, Ben opts not to play at it.
  • 44.4 Wide enough for the batsman to not play at it.
  • 44.3 FOUR! Shorter in length outside off, Stokes sees the width and cuts it uppishly past the diving gully fielder for a boundary. The fielder there could have done better to prevent the ball from going to the fence.
  • 44.2 Wide outside off stump, the batsman leaves it alone.
  • 44.1 Lands it on a length outside off, Stokes shoulders his arms to it.
  • 43.6 The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through. 140/5
  • Jonny Bairstow is the next man.
  • 43.5 OUT! A wicket against the run of play. Bishoo who was not bowling that well gets a wicket and a big one too. Root is walking back to the hut after getting another fifty-plus score. Bishoo floats a full ball on off and gets it to turn away from the batsman. Root tries to sweep it but it goes off the toe end to Blackwood at first slip who takes an easy catch. The free-flowing partnership between these two has been broken and Bishoo is delighted with the wicket. Half the side gone for England here!

  • 42.4 Angles it into the pads, Stokes shuffles across and tries to flick but misses. The ball hits his thigh pad and rolls on the leg side behind the stumps. Root sets off for a leg bye. The keeper is quick to the ball and scores a direct hit at the striker's end but Joe has made his ground. A leg bye taken.
  • 42.3 Back of a length on off, Stokes defends it off the back foot.
  • 42.2 FOUR! He will punish you all day if you keep bowling that line and length. Full and wide outside off, Stokes leans into it and drives it through covers for another boundary.
  • 42.1 Back of a length on middle, Stokes defends it off the back foot.
  • 41.6 FOUR! A low full toss on middle, Root goes down on one knee and sweeps it behind square on the leg side for a boundary. The spinner is leaking a lot of runs here. 56 runs have been scored in the last 10 overs. 132/4
  • 41.5 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 41.4 Floats it on middle, Root goes down on one knee and paddle sweeps it fine down the leg side for a couple.
  • 41.3 Drags his length back on middle, Stokes camps back and drives it down to long on for a run.
  • 41.2 Shorter in length outside off, Joe punches it through covers for a run.
  • 41.1 Slower through the air around off, Root leaves it through to the keeper.
  • 50-run stand up between Joe Root and Ben Stokes.
  • 40.6 EDGY FOUR! Roach is deeply frustrated. He pitches it further up to the batsman outside off, induces an outside edge as Stokes attempts to drive. It screams through the vacant space between slips and gully for a boundary. Expensive over but you cannot blame the bowler for not trying. Roach is bowling his heart out, needs more support from his teammates. 124/4
  • 40.5 Roach lands it on a length outside off, a bit on an inward movement, Stokes leans forward and across to whip it through mid-wicket but gets an inside edge onto the pads.
  • 40.4 Same area, off the front foot this time. The length is full to which Ben leans forward and drives for a couple of runs.
  • 40.3 FOUR! Uses his height to good advantage! Stands tall inside the crease to a shortish ball and packs a punch through extra cover for a boundary.
  • 40.2 Once again Stokes is solidly behind the line as he defends it to covers.
  • 40.1 Good length delivery on middle and off, Stokes gets behind the line and defends it to the off side.
  • 39.6 FOUR! The run-machine gets to another fifty. How costly will that drop catch prove? He was dropped on 8, if you remember. Tosses it up on off, Root gets down on one knee and sweeps it through mid-wicket and the ball races to the fence. His good run of form continues. He knows he still has a long way to go. 114/4
  • Joe Root has been in sublime form in the recent past. Hasn't looked troubled in this knock, apart from the dropped catch.
  • 39.5 Floats it on off, Root punches it to covers.
  • 39.4 Shorter in length, Root thinks about cutting it but then pulls out.
  • 39.3 Drags his length back outside off, Root cuts it to point.
  • 39.2 Plays it with the spin towards mid-wicket for a run.

  • 38.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 108/4
  • 38.5 Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 38.4 FOUR! To add salt to the wound, Stokes drives this full toss outside off through covers for a boundary. Glorious!
  • 38.3 DROPPED! FOUR! Another one goes down! These are regulation slip catches. Ben Stokes is the man who gets a life this time. Roach bowls it on a length on off from around the wicket. Stokes tries to defend it from the crease but gets an outside edge to Brathwaite at second slip. He does not pick it up and the ball hits his hands as it goes down to the third man fence for a boundary. The captain and the vice-captain both have got a reprieve each. Roach is frustrated as he lets out a loud roar in anguish.
  • 38.2 A low full toss outside off, Stokes drives it straight to mid off.
  • 38.1 Lands it on a length around off, Stokes gets it off the outer half to gully.

They never let the Englishmen score freely and also chipped in with three very important wickets. It would have been an even better session had Powell not dropped the opposition skipper, Joe Root. He along with Malan will look to stitch a good partnership and take England out of trouble. The away side will want to continue picking wickets after the break. • Shannon Gabriel will bowl from the other end. He will be coming up the hill. He has three slips and a gully in place for him. The Windies will also hope that he has sorted his no ball issues.

  • Hello and welcome to the first day of the second Test between England and West Indies at Headingley. A very lopsided first game meant that the hosts have taken a 1-0 lead. They dominated the visitors in every department and Root would hope for the same to continue. The skipper has already confirmed his eleven with one change that is Chris Woakes coming in for the outgoing Toby Roland-Jones. The Windies on the other hand, would want to put their defeat behind and come out with new plans. They will have to play out of their skins, if they are to surge a comeback in this series. Let us hope we witness an even contest between bat and ball. Stay tuned for the all-important toss in a while.
  • Once again it was James Anderson who was the star with the ball for England. He claimed his 23rd Test fifer but was not supported enough from the other end. The English team has its back to the wall now and will have to bat really well to keep themselves in this Test match. Do join us in a short while for their reply.
  • The West Indian bowlers did a tremendous job on day one to bundle out the hosts and all they needed was their batsmen to stand up and deliver the goods. The start though was shaky as they were stuttering at 35 for 3. Something unexpected happened after that. Two young men, Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope joined forces to take the West Indian ship out of troubled waters. The pair raised a double century partnership to wipe out the deficit and then some handy lower order contributions saw them gain a 169-run lead.
  • A lionhearted batting show by West Indies! They have done the unthinkable. Who would have thought after the first Test that they can bat so well and take a first innings lead! Take a bow, Windies!
  • 126.6 OUT! England finally get the last wicket! Gabriel is pinged in front! Stokes bowls a length delivery on off, jags back in a touch. Gabriel tries to defend but misses and is hit on the front pad. The English players go up in an appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Shannon walks down to his partner and after a chat he decides to review it. It is a review in hope as it looks out. The replays show there is no bat involved. Also the impact is in line and it is clipping the leg stump. The on-field decision stays. The handy last wicket partnership has been broken. That will also be LUNCH ON DAY 3!
  • Shannon Gabriel has been given LBW and he reviews it.
  • 126.5 Slower ball outside off, Gabriel tries to defend it but gets beaten.

Roach gets beaten on the defence and the ball brushes his pads before going past the keeper. Stokes gives it a chase and stops the ball near the fine leg fence. They complete two and Blackwood attempts for the third one. Stokes fires in a rocket throw to the keeper who collects and whips the bails off. They appeal and the umpire goes upstairs. • Hello and welcome to the 3rd day of the 2nd Test between England and West Indies at Headingley. The Windies have done the unthinkable and have shown great heart so far. The third day is often considered as the moving day of the Test match and they head into it in the driver's seat. They still have five wickets in hand and would try and extend their lead to something close to 200. England on the other hand, would want to replicate their bowling from the first Test and bundle out the away side as quickly as possible, to keep them in check. We are all set for an intriguing day of cricket. Stay tuned for all the action.

Do join us at 1100 local (1000 GMT) for all the action. Till then, take care and cheers!

  • England bowlers tried their heart out in the afternoon session. That will be a big moment in this game, if the current partnership lasts till then. Anyway, it's the Windies on top currently. Do join us in a short while for some more action.
  • Cricket is a game of great uncertainties. When we were talking - how long will West Indies last on this tasty pitch for the bowlers - they respond with a wicketless session. Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope have shown tremendous potential in this partnership and they are not done yet. Brathwaite lunges forward in defense but is beaten by the inward turn. The ball goes off something to Ben Stokes at first slip who catches it and appeals. The umpire remains put. Root after a chat with his teammates decides to review and they go upstairs. Replays show there was no inside edge on that one and it has clipped the front pad before going to Ben at first slip. • ...Day 2, Session 2...
  • Shai Hope and Kraigg Brathwaite to the rescue for the Windies. They will be extremely happy with how the session panned out. They started off in torrid fashion losing two early wickets, both to James Anderson but the two batsmen, with a slice of luck and good intent, have shifted the momentum towards the tourists. They now trail by another 149 runs and would hope these two will do the majority of the scoring. England, on the other hand, need quick wickets or they will soon be chasing the game. Join us for an exciting second session in a while.
  • 38.6 Edged and short again! Quicker through the air on off, goes on with the arm. Hope plays for the turn but there isn't any. The ball takes the outside edge and goes on the bounce to Stokes at first slip. LUNCH ON DAY 2! 109/3

It looked close to the naked eye but replays show that Hope had hit that. There was a chat between Root and Stokes for a review but they opt not to go for it. Good call in the end.
  • 33.4 Was there an edge? Stokes lands it on a length around off from wide of the crease. It straightens a touch. Hope is squared up in his defense and it goes to the keeper off something. His wrist is more towards fine leg which helps him get the inward movement but does not threaten the outside edge a lot, especially on a ground where there are more dismissals in the slip region - 5 catches per match on an average, the highest in the country, Nass provides the stats.
  • 32.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 90/3

Brathwaite goes a bit across the stumps to work it around but misses and is rapped on the pads. They appeal and the finger goes up. Kraigg opts for the review and the Hawk Eye shows that the impact was outside off, although it was hitting the stumps. A couple of good reviews by West Indies.

  • 28.2 Back of a length on off, Hope defends it off the back foot.
  • 28.1 Angles it into the pads, Brathwaite nudges it down to fine leg for a run.
  • Nasser Hussain on-air mentions that Kraigg Brathwaite plays late and also with soft hands. Hence his edges do not carry to the slip fielders. Interestingly, he brings out the example of Ben Stokes who is completely a different player as he goes hard at the ball and plays more on the front foot. We saw him edging quite a few through the slip cordon yesterday but the Windies players were too kind to take those chances.
  • 27.6 Beaten all ends up! Excellent delivery, on a length just outside off, holding its line, Hope is caught pushing and missing inside the crease. 62/3

  • 27.3 A watchful leave on this occasion by Shai Hope. The line is a testing one outside off and Woakes should persist with it.

  • 26.2 NOT OUT! A successful review for the Windies! Brathwaite survives. Broad bowls a fuller ball angling into the batsman, Brathwaite tries to defend but misses and it hits him on the pads. The English players appeal and the umpire gives it out. It looks very plumb but Brathwaite reviews straightaway. They go upstairs and guess what, the replays show there was a faint inside edge. The decision has to be overturned. Kraigg Brathwaite lives to fight another day and the Windies will breathe a sigh of relief.
  • Brathwaite has been adjudged lbw and he reviews. Maybe he thinks he has hit it.
  • 26.1 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.

Agrees that the young players have not played much of international cricket but at the same time is not ready to take that as an excuse.

  • Surprise, surprise! We head into day two of the second Test between England and West Indies, it is the visitors and not the hosts who have the upper hand. With still a long way to go in the game, it will all rest on how the away side bats today. A lot will depend on the likes of Kraigg Brathwaite, Jermaine Blackwood and Shai Hope if the Windies are to surpass or get close to the hosts' total. For England, with the bowling attack they posses and the pitch also providing a lot of assistance, a collapse cannot be ruled out. Let us see what happens. Welcome to the coverage.
  • ...Day 2, Session 1...
  • The visitors would want to come out tomorrow and try to get close to the English total. They would hope that their batsmen show some resistance and fight it out. The hosts, on the other hand, would want to run through this fragile batting line-up and get a comfortable lead. Do join us for day 2 tomorrow at 1100 local (1000 GMT). Till then, take care and cheers!
  • A near perfect day for the Windies! They battled out the tricky period really well by adding 19 runs and losing the lone wicket of Powell, who fell prey to Anderson. Roston Chase struck thrice in quick succession to keep his side in the game. The lead, however, is approaching 200 and that should be worrying the visiting team. Chasing is not going to be easy on this tricky surface. A very vital session of this Test match coming up shortly. Do join us in a while.

  • ...Day 4, Session 2...
  • England head into lunch in a very good position. They have stretched their lead to 82 and lost only one wicket. The hosts started off really well but the wicket of Root helped pull things back for the visitors. It would have been even better if Malan's catch had been taken. Nevertheless, that has been the story of the Test so far. The away side would hope for some quick wickets after the break. As far as the home side is concerned, they would try and add as many runs as possible on a wicket which is getting slower. Join us for the second session in a while.
