  • So, England have finally declared. They looked to up the ante after the break and they did manage to add some quick runs. The visitors managed to pull things back a little with Chase, as he was their pick of the bowlers today bagging four wickets. The away side has a mammoth task on its hands as they have to cut down a huge deficit and it won't be easy against a star-studded England bowling attack especially with the ball which will do a lot under lights. Join us for the Windies' innings in a while.
  • 135.5 OUT! LBW! Alastair Cook has to walk back. Roston Chase was the one who was dead sure to take the review and it has paid off. He sends in a quicker delivery around off, Cook leans across to flick but misses and is hit on the pads. A loud appeal from the bowler but the umpire shakes his head. Chase after having a word with his skipper immediately takes the review. Ultra Edge shows there is no bat involved and the Ball Tracking shows, it's in line and would have gone on to crash the leg stump. A typical Cook innings comes to an end. A nice gesture shown by the Windies players as they go towards the batsman and congratulate him for his spectacular knock.
  • A huge shout for an LBW against Cook. Not given by Umpire Erasmus. West Indies have taken the review straightaway...
  • 135.4 Full around off, defended off the front foot watchfully.
  • 135.3 On middle and leg, flicked towards mid-wicket for a single.
  • 135.2 Roland-Jones drives the ball straight down the ground.
  • 135.1 Floats it up outside off, Cook crouches low and dabs it pretty late towards short third man where the fielder moves across to his right and dives to stop some runs. A single taken.
  • 134.6 Wide delivery outside off, Cook throws his bat at it. Ends up slicing it over a leaping backward point for a single. 512/7
  • 134.5 Stays back to this length delivery and once again finds the fielder at backward point.
  • 134.4 Continues to spray it outside off, making Cook play at it. The batsman couldn't resist this time and decides to go after it. Misses it completely.
  • 134.3 Outside off, actually wide outside off, Alastair lifts his bat to leave it alone.
  • 134.2 Once again on a similar length and outside off, Alastair flays at it but finds the man at backward point.
  • 134.1 Slants it away wide outside off, could have hit it through the line but Cook resists and lets it be.

  • Toby Roland-Jones is the new man in, replacing Ali.
  • Time for Drinks as well.
  • 131.5 OUT! Moeen Ali bags a duck! Roston Chase gets his third wicket! He gives it a decent flight, lands it outside off. Ali dances down the track to go big down the ground but the ball goes off the splice of the bat and lobs towards backward point where Kraigg Brathwaite nicely settles under that one. The wicket has started to take some turn and that should please Ali as well.

  • 129.4 Presses forward and keeps it out off the front foot.

  • ...Day 2, Session 2...
  • This session- 27 overs, 101 runs and 1 wicket. Another session which has been dominated by England. Cook and Malan started from where they left off but the wicket of the latter just at the stroke of the break must have given some respite to the Windies. They started off well but could not add to the pressure and thereon run scoring became too easy for the English side. They would want to continue in the same manner and add some quick runs before declaring. When shall that happen? Remains to be seen. Join us in a bit for the second session.
  • 117.2 OUT! A wicket at the stroke of lunch! A typical off spinner's dismissal! Tosses it up on off, gets the ball to spin away and bounce sharply. • Nasser Hussain on air has something to discuss. He says declaration isn't important but the timing of it is. He explains during the first session when the sun is out the ball doesn't do much but during the twilight period, there is some assistance off the deck, probably due to lights. So what would be the ideal time for Anderson and Broad to have a go with the pink object is what should Root think about, he reckons...

  • Hello and welcome to the 2nd day of the 1st Test between England and West Indies. The first day panned out how everyone expected it to. The hosts are in a commanding position and with a lot of batting still to come, they would like to bat the visitors out of the game. The Windies, on the other hand would want to make good use of the second new ball and try to trigger a collapse. Let's hope for a better contest between bat and ball. Stay tuned for more updates...
  • ...Day 2, Session 1...
  • With nothing much on the wicket, expect the hosts to come out and continue to pile up the runs tomorrow morning. If the Windies can't find a way to make a comeback, another long day beckons. Join us at 1400 local (1300 GMT) to catch all the action from day 2. Until then, it's goodbye from us. Cheers!
  • Once the stand was broken, Dawid Malan stepped in and made sure he wouldn't let this opportunity go to waste. He's gotten his eye in and another partnership has started to bloom. The Windies had a really tough outing and the fact that they gave up towards the end on the very first day, should tell you how difficult the task would pan out for them in the days to come. Apart from Kemar Roach, rest all were way too erratic and didn't create any impact. Leaked a lot of runs and have let the game slip away to say the least.
  • What a day for England! Alastair Cook, the man of the hour walks back amidst a huge round of applause. He's played an absolute Test innings - full of grit, immense concentration and unflappable temperament. Joe Root couldn't have asked for anything above this. He won a good toss on a batting beauty but then saw two of his batters depart early. He then along with Cook did the resurrection work in a fabulous manner as both of them not only strolled to their respective tons but also accounted for a mammoth 248-run stand which happens to be the highest 3rd wicket partnership at Edgbaston and highest ever in a Day/Night Test.

  • England have bossed the session. They have managed to score 107 runs in 28 overs without losing a wicket. The experienced duo has continued from where they left off due to some good batting and some wayward bowling from the West Indians. Join us for the third and final session of the day.

If they could get another one here, England would surely be in a spot of bother towards the lunch break. Let's see how they fare in the next hour...

  • 10.5 A tad shorter on off, Cook defends it watchfully.
  • Mike Atherton and his observations are really good. He says Holder has placed a man at extra cover but Cook is such a man, who rarely drives the ball until it's a genuine half-volley. He likes to dab the ball late, so what he suggests is that, remove the man at extra cover and bring him to the slip cordon and there are chances of an edge being induced...

The Windies appeal and the umpire shakes his head. After a chat with his teammates, Holder decides to review and they go upstairs. The front foot is fine. There is no inside edge. The ball is pitching in line, has struck him in line and is going on to hit the leg stump. Three reds and the decision has to be overturned. A great bowling change by Holder.
  • Howzzaattt? Is the shout from the bowler. It looks close to the naked eye. Jason Holder has taken the review. Is there an inside edge? Let's wait and find out...

What a return for Kemar Roach! A wayward first over but he has started this one in explicable fashion. Stoneman the debutant has to depart, not a good outing for him. The opening issues for England continue.

  • TOSS - ENGLAND WIN THE TOSS AND OPT TO BAT! Debuts for both the sides. MARK STONEMAN for England and it's KYLE HOPE for the Windies. The former will open the batting for the hosts while the latter had a good time in the warm-up game, scoring a ton. Come this game, both will look to build on the platform that is on offer.
  • As is the case, when there is West Indies playing in white attire, chances of the game being lopsided rises. However, they already have experienced this flavor before and with a good bowling attack, they would expect to come good. The weather in this part of the world is highly unpredictable, so let's hope that it doesn't play spoilsport. Which team will come out on top? Stay with us to see how things unfold. Toss and team news coming up in a bit...
  • Hello and a warm welcome for the first Test match between England and the Windies at Edgbaston. It's going to be a historic one in all likelihood as this shall be the 50th game and the very first Day/Night Test to be played in the country. The hosts though have never tasted how the pink ball plays but one would argue they have the sources to counter it well.
  • ENGLAND HAVE ENFORCED THE FOLLOW-ON! The hosts have managed to wrap things up quickly courtesy a wicket from Broad and a run out. The Windies did manage to add some quick runs after the break but it was never going to be enough. Blackwood was their lone warrior fighting it out there but he ran out of partners. The away side still trail by another 346 runs and they would want to put up a better batting performance than they did in the first innings. Join us for the third innings in a while.
  • 46.6 OUT! WESTLEY WRAPS IT UP! Superb fielding from England's no.3 batsman and that's the end of Cummins. Length ball around off stump, Blackwood wanted the single badly and nudges it towards the leg side before setting off for the run. Westley is quick to attack the ball and fires a direct hit at the striker's end. Cummins is short and replays confirm the same. WEST INDIES HAVE BEEN SHOT OUT FOR 168.

  • ...Day 3, Session 2...
  • This session - 25 overs, 101 runs and 7 wickets. The Windies are staring down the barrel. They are in all sorts of trouble going into lunch. The English bowlers have ran through the visitors' batting line-up, with everybody except Ben Stokes chipping in at the wickets. Nobody barring for Blackwood, who is unbeaten on 60, has provided any resistance. The English bowlers would want to come out and take the remaining two wickets as quick as possible. It would be interesting to see if England do enforce the follow-on. Join us for the second session in a while.

  • Kemar Roach strides out to the middle.
  • 38.3 OUT! Bairstow is right! An excellent review from England and all credit must be given to Jonny. Moeen Ali gets his man. • That is it from us for this game. It has all ended as expected. England thrashed the Windies within three days. They look a very balanced side in home conditions. West Indies on the other hand, will have to sort out their plans and come out fighting if they are to have any chance of leveling the series in the next game. That starts on the 25th of August at Headingly from 1100 local (1000 GMT) onwards. Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • Man of the Match, Alastair Cook says he feels good after scoring a double ton especially after the South Africa series. Mentions it was a good toss to win with the sun out, as it always favors the batsmen here at Edgbaston. Further adds he went into the series against South Africa after scoring quite a few runs for Essex but did not work that well as the pitches then were doing a lot. He admits it feels good after getting some runs under his belt here. Credits Root for his captaincy, his batting and the way he handles the team in the dressing room. ( On asked weather he helps Root with the DRS) He chuckles and says that he is bad at using DRS and Root is way better than him.
  • England skipper, Joe Root feels that it was a remarkable day for his team. Opines that his side was ruthless and executed a crushing win in style. Praises Stuart Broad for becoming England's second highest wicket-taker in Tests and feels that the pacer has been an asset over the years. Expresses joy at the senior players leading from the front. Ends by saying that the pink-ball Test initiation has been good for his team but insists that it's too early to comment on its future.
  • West Indies skipper, Jason Holder says he was very disappointed with the way they played. Admits they have to work on their lines and lengths in bowling. Credits England for their performance. Reckons they will have to believe and work out some plans to come out strongly for the next match. Mentions they lack experience and got nervous on the first day. Applauds Blackwood for his innings, keeping in mind that this was his first Test after a long break. Finishes by saying he hopes that Shannon Gabriel gets fit for the next Test.
  • It was always going to be tough for the Windies against a formidable England pace attack especially under lights. However, the lack of application was shocking and the visitors lost a record-breaking 19 wickets today to make a mockery of the longer format. Jermaine Blackwood in the first innings and Kraigg Brathwaite in the second showed some fight but found no support at all. England's bowlers all shared the spoils with Anderson and Broad dominating. The latter also became England's second highest wicket-taker in the process. Such was the hosts' dominance that this game has ended inside three days despite a rain delay yesterday.
  • Ruthless from England and they have crushed the Windies to go 1-0 up in the 3-match Test series. It was a no contest really barring perhaps the first hour on day one. Alastair Cook's double century was the cornerstone of England's formidable first innings total with skipper Joe Root also weighing in with a fluent ton. The duo's 248-run partnership set the tone for the hosts and Dawid Malan's maiden Test fifty further drove home the advantage. None of the Windies bowlers were able to create pressure apart from Kemar Roach to some extent.
  • 45.4 OUT! Toby Roland-Jones finishes it off. An emphatic victory for England. Toby Lands it on a length outside off, swings away further. Steams in and lands it on a length, nips back in and beats the defenses of Dowrich to clean him up. Dowrich looked clueless and could do nothing about that delivery.
