  • The West Indian middle order failed to step up and capitalize on the magnificent start. Continuous fall of wickets hampered their momentum dearly and eventually they managed just over 200 on the board. Leaving aside his last over, Ben Stokes was the standout performer, ably supported by others. The catching apart from the early drop by Root was exceptional, especially the ground fielding. Let's see what happens in the chase in a short while. There is something in the pitch for the bowlers, so it won't be as straightforward as it looks. See you soon.
  • Late cameo from Jason Holder and West Indies have huffed and puffed to a total with which they can at least fight. Opting to bat after the delayed start, Chris Gayle went berserk once Joe Root dropped him on a duck. The going from the Windies was great in the initial period but then England made a comeback. Ben Stokes along with the two spinners, Rashid and Moeen pulled things back and quietened the visitors progress in the middle overs.
  • 41.6 Full from Stokes, Holder goes deep inside his crease to make some room and lofts it over mid off. It won't go all the way but it's enough to fetch him two runs. Expensive last over from Stokes, 15 runs have come off it. WEST INDIES FINISH ON 204/9!
  • 41.5 OUT! Back of a length ball on the stumps, Taylor makes some room by backing away and gets a top edge behind. Lobs into the gloves of Jos Buttler who takes the simplest of catches.
  • 41.4 It's taken but Holder will survive given it's a Free Hit. Holder connects well and lofts it over mid on, but it's straight into the hands of Joe Root in the deep. A section of the crowd cheers, probably don't realize the West Indies skipper isn't out. Single taken.
  • 41.4 FOUR! Another no ball. One more high full toss from Stokes, Holder makes room and somehow plays it through point for a boundary. That's his second offense. But the umpire hasn't taken him out of the attack for some reason. Free Hit coming up...
  • 41.3 FOUR! Jason Holder is playing a gem of a knock here for his team. Even though this is edgy, it's still valuable runs. Short on middle, Holder clears his front leg and swings hard. Gets a big top edge and it goes over the keeper's head for a boundary.
  • 41.2 Played to the point region by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • 41.1 Length ball around leg, Taylor makes room to go big, misses it completely as Buttler fumbles behind. Still, the batsmen don't take a run.
  • 41.1 No ball! High full toss from Stokes, seems the ball slips out of his hands. Holder plays it over waist height on the off side and takes a run. No ball called so that will be a Free Hit. Stokes immediately goes to Holder and apologizes. Good to see.
  • 40.6 Driven through mid on and that's an easy run. 189/8
  • 40.5 Short of a good length outside off, punched square to deep point as he calls his partner through for one run.
  • Jerome Taylor is the next batsman in.
  • 40.4 OUT! BOWLED! The change of angle works. Willey from over the wicket bowls a wicket-to-wicket line delivery. Bishoo leans forward and across to paddle but misses and it's the left-arm pacer who sweeps his wicket.
  • 40.3 High full toss outside off, Holder looks to clear the fence down the ground but can only miscue his shot to long off for one.
  • 40.2 FOUR! Willey comes from around the wicket and angles it in on off, Holder clears his front leg and smacks it down the ground. Hits it straight enough and it beats the man at long on.
  • 40.1 The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot. One run added to the total.
  • David Willey to bowl again.
  • 39.6 Quicker in pace, Bishoo with a drive to mid on as he sets off quickly and completes a quick single. 181/7
  • 39.5 Length ball outside off, Bishoo with a big swing and an equally big miss.
  • 39.4 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 39.3 Length ball on middle and off, Holder makes room to cut it away but chops it off the inner half back down the pitch. Single taken.
  • 39.2 Fuller from Ben, it's driven straight back to him by the Windies skipper.
  • 39.1 Fullish in length around leg, goes off Bishoo's pads as he tries flicking it down fine. Buttler behind the stumps does well to move to his right and keeps the ball from going past him. Leg bye taken by the batsmen.
  • 38.6 Slower ball which Holder reads early. Pushes it through the gap in the covers and as a result gets a brace. 178/7
  • 38.5 Short outside off, Bishoo arches back and ramps it down to third man to get off strike.
  • 38.4 Brings it back in on the pads, full in length, flicked through to deep mid-wicket for a single.
  • 38.3 The batsman has worked it off his pads behind square. They manage to come back for the second.
  • 38.3 Wide! Down the leg side, No trouble at all for the batsman. Wide signalled by the umpire.
  • 38.2 Another slower one, down the leg side this time, Bishoo flicks it down to fine leg and takes one.
  • 38.1 Starts the over off with a slow dipping yorker on off, Holder off the toe end hits it through the right of the bowler. Quick run is taken.
  • Liam Plunkett back into the bowling attack.
  • 37.6 Comes half-forward to this one and keeps it out safely. 169/7
  • 37.5 Full ball attacking the stumps, driven through mid on for a single.
  • 37.4 The batsman opens the face of the bat and helps it to third man. One run added to the total.
  • 37.3 Jason Holder once again makes room to a back of a length ball, lofts it towards long on. It falls just short of David Willey there who takes it on the bounce. Single taken.
  • 37.2 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 37.2 Wide! Poor line, it's going down the leg side, wide signalled.
  • 37.1 FOUR! Big swing from Jason Holder, gets a thick top edge and finds the fence. Probably the only way to play now. He makes room to this short ball and looks to play a flat-batted shot, it goes over the vacant slip cordon off the top edge and goes away to the third man boundary.
  • 36.6 Flat and short on leg, Jason goes back and finds long on with a punch. Single to end the over and that's Adil Rashid done for the day with the ball. He's finished his quota of 9 overs, 31/2. 161/7
  • 36.5 Quick and flat outside off, Holder drives it to cover.
  • Devendra Bishoo will bat now.
  • 36.4 OUT! A few dot balls, pressure building and Ashley Nurse looks to break the shackles. Lofts the full ball over extra cover but doesn't connect as well as he'd have liked. Root from wide long off runs to his left and takes a good catch. The Windies' innings is dying a slow death.
  • 36.3 Too full, outside off and quite quick in pace, dug out into the off side.
  • 36.2 Straighter one around off, Nurse finds the cover fielder with a solid drive.
  • 36.1 Leg stump line from Rashid, short in length and on a flatter trajectory, Holder gets back and lofts it over mid-wicket. Calls for one and gets off strike.
  • 35.6 Just one from the over, excellent from Ben Stokes. Fuller outside off and it's hit hard to the England skipper at short cover. 159/6
  • 35.5 Finally.... He finds the gap. Drills it through the covers and takes one.
  • 35.4 Fourth time in a row. Right back at the bowler now.
  • 35.3 Another full ball, another drive and once again Jason Holder finds the fielder. This time the one at cover.
  • 35.2 Full again, on the stumps, driven off the toe end back to the bowler.
  • 35.1 Full ball aiming the base of off stump, Holder plays a punchy-drive straight to mid off.
  • Ben Stokes is back.
  • 34.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 158/6
  • 34.5 Loopy outside off, no turn on this occasion, confidently left alone by Ashley Nurse.
  • 34.4 Worked away in front of mid-wicket. Dot ball.
  • 34.3 Shorter in length, punched down the ground towards long off once again for another single.
  • 34.2 Nurse doesn't let the ball turn, meets it at its pitch and eases it down to long off for one.
  • 34.1 Short and flat on middle, goes deep inside the crease and half-pulls it through mid on for a run.
  • Powerplay time! Let's see how many West Indies end up with. Rashid continues...
  • 33.6 Drives it through the covers and keeps strike with a single. 155/6
  • 33.5 FOUR! Coming back in from outside off, Holder looks to run it down to third man but gets an edge in the same area. Gets himself a boundary.
  • 33.4 Comes forward to this fuller delivery and meets it with the full face of the bat.
  • 33.3 Fires it full outside the line of off stump, Holder unable to time the drive finds Eoin Morgan at short cover.
  • Ashley Nurse to bat next.
  • 33.2 OUT! Woakes bags his second! Bowls it full on middle, Powell looks to loft it over mid on but can't as he doesn't play it with enough conviction. Chips it towards David Willey who collects an easy catch running behind a little to his left.
  • 33.1 Angling back in on middle and leg, wristed to short mid-wicket. No run taken.
  • 32.6 Drags the length back, it's turning away from around off, Holder hangs back and punches it straight back to Rashid. 150/5
  • 32.5 The batsman works it down the leg side. They pick up a single.
  • 32.4 Short and flat around off, kept out off the back foot with much ease.
  • 32.3 Extremely full outside off, driven straight to the man at cover.
  • Jason Holder walks into the middle next.
  • 32.2 OUT! Rashid strikes! Tosses it up nicely on the stumps, Mohammed adjusts inside the crease and positions himself for the slog sweep. He connects, gets good elevation but not enough distance. Straight down the throat of Alex Hales at deep mid-wicket who takes a fantastic catch. Another wicket down for the Windies.
  • 32.1 Fired full and flat outside off, drilled hard but straight to the cover fielder.
  • 31.6 Bouncer! The batsman ducks under the bouncer at the last moment. 149/4
  • 31.5 Blocked right under his nose with a straight blade.
  • 31.4 Big swing and a miss from Powell! Sees the width offered outside off on a length, he plants his front foot forward to blast it through or over the covers. Misses it completely however.
  • 31.3 Bouncer, it's much better though this time from Woakes. Isn't bouncing too much as Powell ducks and evades.
  • 31.2 Back of a length on off, doesn't have much room to work with so all Rovman can do it block from the back foot.
  • 31.2 Wide! Way down the leg side, wide called.
  • 31.1 Fullish in length and landed just outside off, driven sweetly off the front foot through covers. One run to the scoreboard.
  • 30.6 Too full, driven hard towards cover where Morgan makes a half-stop and keeps the batsmen to just one. 147/4
  • 30.5 Looped up delivery on off, spinning away, blocked by coming well forward.
  • 30.4 SIX! Half-tracker outside off, Mohammed picks up the length early and rocks back quickly. Muscles the pull over mid-wicket and clears the fence for a biggie.
  • 30.3 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 30.2 Quick again, on the pads this time, worked away on the leg side for a single.
  • 30.1 Quicker one outside off on a full length, driven through the covers for a single.
  • Adil Rashid brought back on to bowl.
  • 29.6 Coming back in off the deck on middle and off, Powell defends it well from within his crease. 138/4
  • 29.6 Wide! Another bouncer, not well controlled as it goes way over the batsman's head. Wide signalled.
  • 29.5 Bit fuller than a length, draws Rovman forward in defense.
  • 29.4 FOUR! Edged but it's away! Wide outside off, Powell goes fishing and gets an edge. It's through the vacant slip cordon and away to the third man fence.
  • 29.3 Fullish in length, drilled towards mid off for a quick run.
  • 29.2 On the shorter side of the length, not by much though, it's still enough to peg Jason Mohammed on the back foot and make him defend.
  • 29.1 Not giving much room as Woakes serves it very close to the off stump, Mohammed pushes it to point for nothing.
  • Chris Woakes returns.
  • 28.6 Takes the pace off it again, on leg stump, flicked away on the leg side. Single and that's the end of the over. 132/4
  • 28.5 Slower in pace around off, tap and run stuff from Rovman. Drops it into the off side and runs through for a quick one.
  • 28.4 Just ahead of a length outside off, plays it square to backward point.
  • 28.3 SIX! That's the shot of the match! Hands down. What a hit, oh my word. Such beauty. Full and on middle and off, Powell just plays a check lofted shot but he's hit it so, so well. With the full face of the bat, he just uses the pace and clears the long off boundary for a maximum.
  • 28.2 The batsman has punched the ball off the back foot. One run added to the total.
  • 28.1 Angling down leg, brushes the pads before going to the keeper on the bounce.
  • 27.6 On the hips, tucked behind square leg for a double. 123/4
  • 27.6 Wide! Stokes tries to change it up and brings out the short one, but it's too short. Umpire signals a wide.
  • 27.5 Darted too far outside off, left alone.
  • 27.4 FOUR! Takes the aerial route and gets the desired result. That's a good shot from Rovman Powell, he picked his spot and executed the shot well. Just lofted the full ball in his slot and cleared mid on for a boundary.
  • 27.3 Finds the gap through the covers again, punches it to sweeper cover. One run added to the total.
  • 27.2 That's landed safely! Although, going by the quality of a player like Chris Woakes, in essence that's a dropped chance. Powell doesn't time his pull shot well and it balloons over backward square leg. Woakes comes running in to his left from fine leg, is hesitant to take off initially and hence, is unable to gets his fingers underneath the ball with the forward dive. Just a single taken.
  • 27.1 Angling back in from around off, on a good length, Mohammed with a punch through to sweeper cover for one run.
  • 26.6 Drives this full ball through the gap in the cover region and retains strike with a single. 113/4
  • 26.5 Angles it in on a full length, Powell leans ahead and wrists it through mid-wicket for one.

  • 26.2 Overpitched on middle stump, driven straight back down the ground for a single.

  • 25.6 Keeps himself rooted deep inside the crease and ends the over. A successful one from Ben Stokes. 107/4
  • 25.5 Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 25.4 Stays back to this back of a length ball and keeps it out safely.
  • 25.3 Holding its line on the fifth stump line, Powell leaves it alone.
  • Rovman Powell will be the new man in.
  • 25.2 OUT! Stokes gets his man! He had been displaying some good pressure bowling, and now, he gets the desired result. Bowled a superb over before drinks, then dismissed Hope in his next one in which he gave away just 1 run, and now, is bowling an excellent over again. This wasn't exactly a wicket taking delivery though, angling down the leg side, Marlon goes after it to tickle it fine. Loud appeal from Buttler and Stokes, but the umpire turns around and signals a wide. The review is quickly taken by Eoin Morgan and Ultra Edge shows that Samuels gets some glove on it. So he's gone, Stokes has the last laugh in this battle. Terrific bowling from the all-rounder. Just shows what pressure can do to a batsman.
  • There is an appeal for a caught behind against Marlon Samuels. The umpire doesn't respond, so Morgan takes the review. This could be close.
  • 25.2 Wide! Goes wide but too wide, Samuels crouches low and leaves it.
  • 25.1 Good length ball close to off, punched off the back foot towards point. No run taken.
  • 24.6 Cut away and cut away aerially. Down to third man and a single is taken to end the over. 106/3
  • 24.5 Zero movement on offer as Liam Plunkett lands it on a length outside off, a solid punch is offered in response from Mohammed as he places it to sweeper cover. Single taken.

  • 24.2 Shaping back in on middle and leg, Jason works it off his hips down on the leg side with soft hands.
  • 24.1 Just back of a length, well outside off, Mohammed leaves it alone.
  • 23.6 Shortish outside off, Marlon hangs his bat inside the line as the keeper takes it. 104/3
  • 23.5 Leans into the fuller ball and pushes it through the covers for a single. He's off the mark.
  • 23.4 Bit wider outside off, no shot offered from Jason Mohammed.
  • 23.3 Length delivery in the off stump channel, Mohammed fails to connect his cut shot. Goes past the edge and into the keeper's gloves.
  • Jason Mohammed is the next man in.
  • 23.2 OUT! That's a great catch from Jonny Bairstow! Already making his contribution coming into the side. Short of a length delivery angling into the body, Shai Hope pulls it over square leg. It's hard and flat, not enough height on it which gives Bairstow a chance at this. Standing in the deep, he moves to his right and times his leap to perfection to catch the ball in his safe hands. Big wicket, it's come at a good time too for England.
  • 23.1 Speared full and outside off, Hope misses it completely in an attempt to dig it out on the off side.
  • 22.6 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. 103/2
  • 22.5 Length delivery on off, makes a bit of room and cuts it straight to point.
  • 22.4 Another sharp bumper from Plunkett, this time Samuels goes for the big pull but the bounce is too big for him to make connection.
  • 22.3 Just back of a length, quite close to the off stick, cut away firmly past point for a single this time.
  • 22.2 Just back of a length, quite close to the off stick, cut away firmly past point for a single this time. The 50-run stand is up between these two as well.
  • 22.1 Length delivery aiming the top of off stump, skidding off the deck, Shai Hope somehow manages to defend it to point from within the crease.
  • Drinks break.
  • 21.6 Excellent delivery. Stokes bends his back and dishes out a bouncy delivery around off, Samuels hops and fends it off with little discomfort. Cheers from the crowd. A good over by Ben. 102/2
  • 21.5 Slower delivery outside off, Samuels tries to run it down but misses.
  • 21.4 Uses the angle of the bowler and works it on the leg side for a single.
  • 21.3 Full and wide outside off, another play and a miss for Shai.
  • 21.2 This one is way wide outside off, just inside the tramline, maybe, Hope chases and misses.
  • 21.1 Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 20.6 Angling down the leg side, the batsman fails to flick and it goes off his thigh pad to fine leg. A leg bye taken. 101/2
  • 20.5 Gets behind the line of the delivery and defends it to mid-wicket.
  • 20.4 Short and around off, Samuels pulls across the line, not timed well as it goes wide of mid on. The fielder makes a sliding stop and the batsmen cross for a single. 100 up for West Indies!
  • 20.3 On a length and around off, Hope gets back to work it through backward square leg. He runs the first run hard but that's all he will get.
  • 20.2 Hurrying back into the batsman from a length outside off, Hope does well to keep it out towards point.
  • 20.1 Lands it on a length outside off, Hope taps it down from the bottom half of the bat towards backward point.
  • 19.6 Play and a miss! An off pace delivery, served on a driving length outside off, Samuels tried pushing at it but missed. Some sound there but that was of the bat hitting the deck. 98/2
  • 19.5 Speedy bouncer around off, Samuels ducks.
  • 19.5 Wide! An attempted slower delivery, on a length and sliding down, Marlon tries to flick but misses.
  • Samuels stops Stokes. Maybe, some sightscreen issue. Ben looks back, ain't too pleased as he trudges to his bowling mark.
  • 19.4 Angling into the batsman, fuller and around off, Shai gets forward and drives it through cover-point for a run.
  • 19.3 Fullish and outside off, driven confidently off the front foot to short extra cover.
  • 19.2 Stokes vs Samuels! Here we go... Shortish again, outside off, Marlon runs it down to third man for a run.
  • 19.1 Short and outside off, Hope stands tall and slaps it over point for a single.
  • Ben Stokes is introduced into the attack now. A bit of history between him and Samuels, so the duel between them should be interesting.
  • 18.6 Gets back inside the crease with the cut shot but it takes the outside edge. Goes towards short third man where Moeen Ali makes a good stop. 94/2
  • 18.5 Another charge given by Samuels and once again he mistimes his shot, this time towards mid on.
  • 18.4 Skips down the track and takes it on the full. Hits it firmly but has miscued it. Goes to mid-wicket on one bounce.

  • 17.5 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 17.4 Fullish and on middle, Hope pushes it towards mid on and takes on Moeen Ali. The fielder is quick but Shai is quicker to complete the single. No direct hit either.
  • 17.3 FOUR! That's a lovely shot from Shai Hope. Plunkett gets his length wrong again, short and around off, Hope hops and pulls it over mid-wicket for a powerful boundary.
  • 17.2 Good length ball on middle, angling down, Samuels tries to glance but misses. It kisses his thigh pad and rolls in front of the square leg umpire. A leg bye taken.
  • 17.1 Spears in a fuller length ball on middle, Samuels knocks it down to mid on. Moeen is alert this time and hence no run taken.
  • 16.6 Hangs back inside the crease to a short ball and punches it to sweeper cover for one. 85/2
  • 16.5 Fuller and outside off, hit with the spin to covers.
  • 16.4 Samuels has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 16.3 Appeal for an lbw! Not given. A nicely tossed up leg spinner landing around off, Samuels fails to defend off his front foot and is hit on the pads. They appeal but the impact is outside off. Also, the ball has popped out off the pads and the first slip fielder catches it. But no edge there either. Rashid contemplates taking the DRS but he himself is not looking too sure. Nothing on the replays. Good decision in the end.
  • 16.2 Gives this one some extra air and drops it on a fuller length outside off. Samuels drives it with the spin through extra cover and takes a couple.
  • 16.1 A flatter leg spinner on middle and leg, defended back.

  • 15.4 Hope plays it with an angled bat and guides it to third man. One run added to the total.
  • 15.3 FOUR! A well controlled pull shot by Shai Hope. First really convincing shot from his bat. He rides the bounce there, nicely on top of the short ball and pulls it in front of square leg for a boundary.
  • 15.2 Lands it on a length and outside off, Samuels taps it down wide of backward point. The fielder dives to stop the ball and has an immediate shy at the striker's end. Misses and they cross for an overthrow.
  • 15.1 Pitches it full and on off, it's driven firmly through covers for a single.
  • Liam Plunkett to have a go.
  • 14.6 Samuels has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 74/2
  • 14.5 Loopy and on middle, it's slogged down to deep mid-wicket. An exceptional piece of the fielding in the deep by Alex Hales keeps them down to a single. The key was that he released the ball early.
  • 14.4 Goes on the back foot and punches it through covers for a single.

  • 12.3 Gets on the front foot and pushes a full ball back to the bowler.

  • 11.5 Width on offer again, outside off, Shai flashes his bat through the line, makes decent connection but finds the gully fielder.
  • 11.4 FOUR! Not from the middle of the bat. Hope attacks the room outside off, tries to blast it through the off side but it takes the bottom edge and speeds down to the third man fence.
  • 11.3 Beauty of a delivery! Willey angles it across the batsman, landing it full and around off, Hope pushes at it, no footwork, and gets beaten. It didn't move much, just held the line.

  • 11.1 Good length delivery angling away from the batsman, Samuels defends it off his back foot to point.

  • 8.6 Hope has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. 53/2
  • Marlon Samuels in next.
  • 8.5 OUT! Redemption for Root, he takes a fine, fine catch! In the last few shots, timing was eluding Gayle and eventually he has thrown away his wicket. Tries to go big over the off side again, like on the second ball of this over, but ends up slicing it in the air over covers. A completely miscued shot, Root runs back from inside the ring, keeps his eyes on the ball and grabs a terrific catch with a dive. Roooooooooot, goes the crowd! • 6.3 Full and on middle, angling away, Gayle pushes it with an angled bat to backward point. Big miscommunication over a run but eventually Gayle makes it safely. • 0.6 Bangs in a bouncer, around middle, Lewis sits underneath it. Good start from Woakes! 1/0
  • 0.5 Straighter in line on this occasion, Gayle turns it off his hips through square leg for one. With this, the big man completes 1000 runs in ODI cricket against England. Impressive feat.
  • 0.4 Watchful, Gayle. It's not in line of the stumps, sprayed wide outside off and the Trinidadian makes a leave.

  • West Indies - Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Marlon Samuels, Shai Hope(w), Rovman Powell, Jason Mohammed, Jason Holder(c), Devendra Bishoo, Ashley Nurse, Jerome Taylor, Kesrick Williams.
  • England - Alex Hales, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(w), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett, David Willey.
  • Jason Holder calls it correctly at the toss and WEST INDIES WILL BAT! Both captains feel it's a good strip to bat on. Chris Gayle is back in the mix for the Windies while for England Chris Woakes is making a comeback from injury. There are no major surprises.
  • Pitch - The wicket is hard and there are some cracks on it. There might not be much moisture in it in spite of all the rain. The pitch might take turn so runs on the board first up will be important, feels James Anderson.
  • England, on the other hand, did announce in the pre-match conference that they are going to back Jonny Bairstow to open the batting for them - a spot that he can make his own. The team combination for them would be interesting to see - whether they would hand a debut to Tom Curran is a mystery. All in all, this promises to be an exciting encounter, weather permitting. Stay with us for more updates...
  • Hello and a warm welcome for the first ODI between England and West Indies in Manchester. The initial greetings can afford to be warm, given the cold weather out there! The Tests saw a competitive Caribbean side turn up. We can hope more of an even contest in the limited overs fixtures as the shorter forms are relatively the strong formats for them. The visitors would be buoyed by the availability of their mainstays Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels et al.
  • After a frustrating delay first up due to the wet patches on the ground, we are finally ready to get underway. Thanks to the groundsmen. We will have a 42-overs game, with the Powerplays now changed to 9 overs, 25 overs and 8 overs.
  • That's all we have from this one-sided affair. Let's hope for a better contest in the second ODI at Trent Bridge on 21st September at 1230 local (1130 GMT). Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!
  • Man of the Match, Jonny Bairstow says it wasn't a great time to slip but was delighted to come back for the third run for his ton. Admits that it seems a long time ago since he made his ODI debut so he wants to make the most of the opportunity given to him. Ends by saying the internal competition in the team helps everyone to become better and do more.
  • Eoin Morgan says he thought they came back well. Continues saying West Indies started off well but his team adapted to the conditions quickly. Adds their bowling was great according to him which kept the target to a decent amount. On the dropped chance, mentions Root doesn't drop many so it's important to keep creating chances. Praises Rashid as he kept bowling well, as did the bowling unit in general which was very encouraging to see. When asked about Bairstow, states that after a performance like this, it's very difficult to leave him out.
  • Jason Holder reckons they were 40 runs short. Admits they didn't bowl well and conceded too many boundaries. Realizes that his side needs to rotate strike if the boundaries are not coming, that it's an area of concern. Acknowledges the contrast from T20 cricket. Adds they lost wickets at crucial moments and let themselves down by being too inconsistent. When asked about missing out on automatic World Cup qualification, says there's work to be done obviously, but the focus is on this series with Trent Bridge coming up first.
  • West Indies were of no match. Apart from Chris Gayle's onslaught at the beginning, they never were in the game. Their bowlers were anything but impressive and it turned out to be a no contest.
