  • England bowled well and overall it was a collective effort on their part. Though they could have done well to restrict the damage, considering that they removed two set batsmen (Finch and Marsh) quickly. Mark Wood and Moeen Ali were the best among all. Adil Rashid picked up two wickets but was a bit expensive. Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett were good in parts but both went for aplenty. Right then, is 304 enough? Well, England do have the firepower in their ranks to gun this down. But they would very well know that the Aussie quicks would come out hard at them. Who will go 1-0 up? Join us back for the run chase in a short while...
  • Mitchell Marsh, too, departed as soon as he reached his fifty and it seemed like England are crawling their way back in this game. But it wasn't meant to be. Marcus Stoinis then stood up for his side and blazed through to a cracking 60 off just 40 balls to make sure his side ends on a high. Tim Paine did well to rotate strike and together they added quick 80 runs off just 59 balls with the former being the dominating one.
  • A competitive total on the board for Australia! They were put into bat and lost David Warner very early in the innings. Steven Smith did get a start but was removed before he could get his eye in. However, it was Aaron Finch who blasted away at the top. He stroked a boundary on the very first ball of the match and continued to motor along. He smashed his way to a rollicking ton and found an able partner in Mitchell Marsh who continued from where he left off in the Ashes. The duo accounted for a steady 118-run stand before the centurion threw it away.
  • 49.6 FOUR! A boundary to end the innings! Australia should thank Jonny Bairstow here! Really sloppy! Back of a length delivery on middle and angling in, Tye swings across the line. Bairstow in the deep goes for the catch as he comes sprinting in. However, the ball bounces in front of him and he doesn't have his body behind the line. Concedes a boundary as AUSTRALIA FINISH ON 304/8!
  • Andrew Tye is the new man in.
  • 49.5 OUT! Second wicket in the over! This is turning out to be an amazing last over from Plunkett! Good length ball on middle and leg, Cummins lofts it down the ground but doesn't get enough behind it. Jason Roy at long on comes a couple of steps in to take a safe catch.
  • 49.4 FOUR! How unfortunate is Plunkett? He has bowled so well but this won't please him at all! Shortish in length on middle and leg, Pat Cummins wildly swings across the line but gets a fat top edge which sails over the keeper for a streaky boundary. 300 up for Australia!
  • 49.3 Hits the deck hard, gets the extra bounce to beat the attempted pull shot of Cummins. Good over so far!
  • Mitchell Starc walks out to bat next.
  • 49.2 OUT! Good take in the deep by Moeen Ali! Short of a length delivery, this time Paine hits it well. Seemed like it would travel over the fence but Ali at deep square leg swiftly moves to his right and remains cool to take it near the ropes.
  • 49.1 Shortish in length and outside off, Tim Paine looks to pull but is beaten by the extra bounce.
  • 48.6 Fuller in length and angling in, flicked towards deep square leg and comes back for a brace. 296/6
  • 48.5 In the air... safe again! Short and climbing off the deck, Tim Paine looks to pull but gets a top edge. It flies towards Rashid at fine leg who charges in but the ball lands short. They take a single.
  • 48.4 A short delivery which has been pulled away. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • 48.3 That must have hurt! Back of a length delivery, at 141.4 kph, Paine tries to hoick it across the line but misses to get hit on the box. The ball rolls away and he manages to scamper through to the other end. A leg bye taken.
  • 48.2 Played to the point region by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • 48.1 He had a packed leg side field so what does Pat do? He makes room and mistimes his loft over extra cover. Had enough to clear the infield as they take a couple.
  • Mark Wood is back on!
  • 47.6 Tim Paine shuffles across to play the reverse scoop but fails to get any wood on it. He thinks it might be called as a wide but the umpire doesn't. 288/6
  • 47.5 On a length and outside off, punched through cover for another single. Good bowling from Chris!
  • 47.4 The batsman has attempted to put bat on ball but fails.
  • 47.3 Rocks back and pulls this short ball in front of square on the leg side for a single.
  • 47.2 Back of a length outside off, Pat looks to tap and run but gets an inside edge on the pads as the ball rolls towards the off side for a single. Pat is off the mark.
  • Pat Cummins walks in next.
  • 47.1 OUT! Mistimed hit and Root takes it! He claims the catch and it's good to see the batsman trusting him. Marcus Stoinis walks back after a breezy knock! Back of a length delivery on middle and off, Stoinis makes room to hit it down the ground. Gets it off the high portion of the bat and the ball almost dips in front of Root who does well to dive forward at mid off and takes it inches above the ground. First wicket for Woakes!
  • 46.6 The batsman has driven it through mid on. One run added to the total. 285/5
  • 46.5 SIX! Nailed it! Back of the hand delivery on the stumps, Stoinis clears his front leg and smokes it down the ground for a clean biggie.
  • 46.5 Wide! Slower one down the leg side, Marcus looks to swipe it down the leg side but misses.
  • 46.4 FOUR! Easy peasy for Stoinis! That brings up his fifty too, 2nd in this format! Full toss, veering on the pads. Flicked with disdain through backward square leg. No need to run!
  • 46.3 The batsman plays a pull shot to this short delivery. They pick up a single.
  • 46.2 Eases the full ball down the ground for a single.
  • 46.1 In the air... well short of Bairstow! Plunkett keeps it nice and full outside off, Marcus makes room to go inside out but the bat turns in his hands. He slices it over extra cover but it lands safely before Jonny mops it up. Two taken.
  • 45.6 Shortish on middle, a mistimed pull towards square leg for just a single. 269/5
  • 45.5 Fuller in length outside off, driven hard but finds Morgan at cover. Just a single.
  • 45.4 Length delivery outside off, slapped powerfully square of the wicket on the off side for a brace.
  • 45.3 FOUR! Beats the man at mid off! Fuller in length and outside off, Stoinis drills it down the ground. He hopes that the mid off fielder doesn't cut it and he can't get to it. The ball races away to the fence for a boundary.
  • 45.2 Length ball outside off, dabbed towards third man for a single.
  • 45.1 Fuller in length and angling in, wristed through mid-wicket for a single.
  • Chris Woakes is back on! He has been expensive today, giving 53 runs in his 8 overs so far.
  • 44.6 On a length and outside off, punched towards cover for a single. 260/5
  • 44.5 Slower delivery, takes eternity to arrive. It's at 98kph, Tim waits, waits and then hits it over point for just a single.
  • 44.4 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 44.3 FOUR! That has come off the meat and in the gap too! Shortish ball on middle, Paine swivels and pulls it over square leg. There is a man at fine leg but he can't get to it. Back-to-back boundaries for the Aussie keeper. Brings up the 50-run stand between the two.
  • 44.2 FOUR! Good batting this! Paine sees that mid on is inside the circle so what does he do? Picks up the slower ball from Liam and pulls it cleanly over mid on. The fielder gives it a chase but to no avail.
  • 44.1 Shortish and angling in on the body, Paine helps his pull through backward square leg for a couple. Good running! 250 comes up for Australia!
  • 43.6 Very full on the stumps, swinging back in a touch, worked through mid-wicket and picks up a couple does Stoinis. 248/5
  • 43.5 Uses the pace and runs it down towards third man for a single.
  • 43.4 Stays rooted inside the crease and flat bats it through mid-wicket for one.
  • 43.3 Stands back and dabs it towards the off side.
  • 43.2 Looks to hit it across the line but gets a thick inside edge on the pads. MS looks frustrated!
  • 43.1 FOUR! Has that gone all the way? Shortish outside off, too much room for Stoinis to work with. He rises on the toes and flays it over point. There is a man in the deep but the ball is wide from him. The umpire confirms with the fielder whether it has gone all the way or not. Replays show it bounced before going into the rope.
  • 42.6 Punches it off the back foot through covers for a single. 240/5
  • Fine leg is up.
  • 42.5 FOUR! No one in the deep! Shortish in length on middle, Marcus pulls it over mid-wicket for a boundary.

  • 41.3 Fractionally overpitched outside off, driven sweetly but finds the man in the cover region.

  • 40.5 Good calling from Paine! He is really alert. Back of a length outside off, tapped with an open bat face towards point and Stoinis looks for the run. Roy charges in and seeing that, Paine sends his partner back. These fine things matter a lot in cricket.
  • 40.4 Short delivery, sits up nicely for Paine. Pulled with the angle to the leg side for a run.

  • 39.4 SIX! Bang goes Stoinis! Hit with command. He is nimble on his feet and takes it on the full. Bludgeons it over wide long on and the ball just clears the ropes. Mind you, these are big boundaries and it takes a lot of power to clear them.

  • We are all set to get underway. The players and umpires have made their way out to the middle. The Aussie openers - David Warner and Aaron Finch stride out. England to begin with Chris Woakes first up. Two slips in place for him. Here we go...
  • Toss - England win the toss and opt to field.
  • Australia, on the other hand, will be brimming with confidence at the moment. Coming out of an emphatic win in the traditional format, they would be eyeing to keep the domination over the opposition. When it comes to the 50-over format, they aren't the best of the sides due to some inexperience. They have decided to give a look at a few rookies so let's wait and find out who gets a nod. We welcome you for the opening encounter at the MCG. Toss and team update coming up in a bit...
  • The Ashes is done and dusted but the animosity between the two sides isn't. Australia and England now come together for the 5-match ODI series. It's been a really grueling one for England and one would feel that the change in format, brings about the change in fortunes for them. They have developed reasonably well in limited-overs since then 2015 World Cup and it would be interesting to see how they fare this time around.
  • That's all from this match. We look forward to your company for the second ODI on 19th January in Brisbane. Do join us at 1320 local (0320 GMT) for all the action. Now, you can switch over to the concerned tab for the South Africa vs India second Test match. Until next time, it's goodbye from us. Cheers.
  • Victorious England captain Eoin Morgan is proud to be part of such a record chase. On Jason Roy's innings, he says that the opener has done it many times in the past, getting good starts but finally converts into a big one tonight. in spite of such a comprehensive win, Morgan feels that there is still a long way to go in the series. Says that it is nice to see the top three bat well and the line-up looks deep. On the target set, he feels that these days, 300 is a difficult score to chase but had it not been for Roy, someone would have put his hand up.
  • Jason Roy picks up the Man of the Match Award for his blistering knock of 180. He says he is out of words right now. Adds that he is honoured to possess England's highest individual score. Feels that the time when he was left out of the ODI squad was the one for him to reflect on his technique and style. On being asked about the hand injury, he says he should be fine.
  • With disappointment written all over his face, Steven Smith, the Aussie skipper comes over for an interview. He credits Jason Roy for his extraordinary knock and adds that he was supported well by Joe Root. Feels that they were a bit short on runs and 340-50 would have been more competitive. Further reckons that they didn't start well with the ball either and that cost them dearly. Praises Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis for their knocks but immediately adds that had Aaron Finch continued for a bit longer, they would have got more. Finds it interesting that they didn't get much swing early on and opines that they should have hit good areas more consistently. Informs that Pat Cummins will be rested and Josh Hazlewood will be back for the next game. Admits that they need to start playing better cricket.
  • It was a below ordinary performance by Australia, however, they were decent for some part at the start. The middle overs were very disappointing for them as the likes of Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis, failed to create any pressure. England will be buoyed with this victory and it will serve as a tonic for their hapless tour. A lot of soul-searching to do for the Aussies before the next ODI which is after a 4-day break.
  • Powered by Aaron Finch's century and handy knocks by Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, the hosts posted a challenging total in excess of 300 on the board. But their bowlers failed to come to party. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow gave a steady start to the chase, and although they lost two quick wickets, the presence of Roy in the middle ensured that they never fell behind the eight ball. Along with Joe Root, Jason raised a double century partnership and in the process also broke Alex Hales' record for the highest individual score for England in ODIs.
  • A comprehensive win for England! They have finally managed to taste some success against Australia on this tour. The New England, as they are called nowadays, played exceedingly well today to outclass the world champions in all facets of the game. This is now the 8th loss that Australia have suffered in their last 9 completed ODIs. Definitely a concern for the Men in Yellow and they would have to come up with better strategies and gameplan in the next match.

  • 0.6 FOUR! Crunched! Short and width on offer, Roy pounces on the opportunity and crashes it past backward point for a boundary. Good start for England. 7/0
  • 0.5 On a good length, defended solidly off the back foot.
  • 0.4 Brilliantly bowled! Full and fast, swinging in. This is Starc's stock delivery. Roy does well to clear his front leg and keeps it out.
  • 0.3 Tight run! Bairstow tucks this one in front of square leg and sets off. Tye charges in, dives and underarms a throw at the keeper's end but misses. Would have been close if he hit.
  • 0.2 Hangs back to the good length delivery which is slanting away and taps it to covers.
  • 0.1 England are away! On a length, straight on this occasion. Roy tucks it nicely to square leg for a run to open his account.
  • 0.1 Wide! Doesn't get his radar right first up. Slips this one down the leg side, swinging further down. Roy aims for the flick but misses.
  • We are back for the chase. Another exciting passage of play awaits us. Who will come out on top? Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow to open the batting for England. Mitchell Starc to have a crack at the batsmen with the first new ball. Here we go...
