Ye Jawaani Teri: Meri Pyaari Bindu's catchy cabaret number is worth a shimmy

In the midst of rehashes of popular 1980s and 1990s dance numbers comes a song set in the same era yet refreshingly original.

The latest song of Akshay Roy's romantic comedy Meri Pyaari Bindu - 'Ye Jawaani Teri' is a tribute to the music of 1970s and 1980s without conveniently replicating any particular song from the retro era.

The song features the lead pair Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra shaking a leg together. While its composition, backed by Western musical instruments, sounds like a cabaret number, it is set in a rustic environment of a godown, surrounded by interesting elements like the skeleton of a Calcutta tram, a haathgadi and a life size mural of veteran music composer Bappi Lahiri.

Though Lahiri was the pioneer of the disco fever in Hindi cinema, the cabaret number is nonetheless a tribute to him because of the magic he created . 'Ye Jawaani Teri' follows the same path and is in fact the answer to the question that Lahiri raised in the title song of Babbar Subhash's 1982 musical Disco Dancer - 'Jawaani Kya Hoti Hai?'.

Rendered by the youthful voices of Jonita Gandhi and Nakash Aziz, the song stealthily, yet effectively, treads on the line between youthfulness and old world charm. While Sachin-Jigar's composition transports the viewer to the retro era, Khurrana's infectious energy and Chopra's sprightly presence provide the freshness quotient of the song.

The lyrics, penned down by Kausar Munir are simple yet fit perfectly into the moulds of the composition. The choreography is on point and gives the viewers some easy yet catchy steps to dance on. The best song of this album, in our humble opinion.

Meri Payaari Bindu is co-produced by Maneesh Sharma and Aditya Chopra's Yash Raj Films. It is slated to release on 12 May.
