In December 2016, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma announced that he will make a film titled Sashikala , which will explore the life of late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa, through the eyes of her close aide VK Sasikala.
The announcement of the film was rather timely as he got his title registered days after Jayalalithaa’s demise. Now, after Sasikala’s conviction in the disproportionate assets case was upheld by the Supreme Court, Varma has unveiled the poster of his film, along with a few insights about what to expect in his film.

The poster depicts a colourful sketch of Sasikala against a white background. Varma revealed that his multilingual film, to be made in Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil, will explore the relationship between Jayalalithaa and Sasikala. RGVÂ also added that he will include shocking details that he has obtained from the servants of 36 Poes Garden, the former residence of Jayalalithaa. He revealed, through a tweet, that the gardener of Poes Garden told him that the majority of MLAs are supporting the new chief minister, Palaniswamy, as they are handpicked by Sasikala from the Manargudi Mafia. Saskiala’s family is infamously known as ‘Manargudi Mafia’ and they believe to be running the show in Tamil Nadu.

Varma’s take on Tamil Nadu politics will be interesting to watch, particularly because of the traction that the issue has gained following the death of Jayalalithaa and the conviction of Sasikala. Last year, Varma made a biopic on the notorious dacoit, Veerappan, but the much-anticipated film bombed at the box office.
Currently, he is busy prepping up for the release of Sarkar 3, the third installment of his political drama, the Sarkar franchise. It stars Amitabh Bachchan, Yami Gautam, Manoj Bajpayee, Jackie Shroff, Ronit Roy and Amit Sadh. It is slated to release on Varma’s birthday, i.e., 7 April.
