The most talked about film in Kollywood currently is Joker. It’s a small film without any stars and made on a shoe string budget of Rs 3 crores by director Raju Murugan . The film has been getting unanimous critical acclaim, with the prestigious Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan giving it a record 50/100 marks in its review section.
However, the icing on the cake was when Superstar Rajinikanth called up the producers of Joker, Dream Warrior Pictures' SR Prabhu (Karthi’s cousin and also producer of Kaashamora) and congratulated him on producing such a good film.
Later Rajinikanth who rarely uses his social media handle tweeted about it:
I applaud the team of #joker, brilliant film !

Earlier Rajinikanth’s son-in-law Dhanush watched the film and tweeted

(Translation: Don’t know whom to appreciate—director, actor or music composer? Tears in my eyes, please do watch this movie)
He also posted a picture with the Joker team.

Meanwhile the producers issued an aggressive and unique poster ad against piracy, requesting people who watched the film online to pay for it properly (with bank account details) so that the same can be utilised for construction of toilets for the needy. This is also the core issue of the film.
The producers have said that online response has been good. The film has also stirred up a debate all over Tamil Nadu on vexing issue of open defecation and health problems posed by it.
At the Tamil Nadu box-office, Joker is now a sleeper hit. The film had a very limited release in small screens, but after the opening weekend, it is now playing in all big screens of multiplexes with more number of shows.
Joker has grossed Rs 2.67 crores from 152 screens in Tamil Nadu and 13 screens in Karnataka in five days. The word of mouth for the film is so good that multiplexes have increased number of shows in its second week starting 19 August.
And with Rajinikanth endorsing the film, it should trickle down to crucial B and C centres, ending up becoming profitable for its producers.
