Music icon Prince honoured by Pantone with custom colour as tribute to 'Purple Rain'
The Prince Estate and Pantone Color Institute announced today the creation of a standardised custom color to represent and honor international music icon, Prince. The color pays tribute to Prince’s contribution to music, art, fashion and culture.
The purple hue, represented by his 'Love Symbol #2' was inspired by his Yamaha purple piano, which was scheduled to go on tour with the performer before his untimely death at the age of 57.
The association of Prince with this color purple started in 1984 with the release of the film Purple Rain, along with its Academy Award-winning soundtrack featuring the iconic song.
His music was not contained in one genre, and had the attributes of funk, pop, R&B and rock. He won seven Grammy awards over the course of his career, two of which were for Purple Rain.
