MTV announced the nominees of its Video Music Awards 2017, and music fans have many reasons to look forward to the event on 27 August, whether it is the fact that Kendrick Lamar has been nominated eight times for the video of 'HUMBLE.' or MTVs decision to dissolve gender-based categories.

The nominees in the Best Pop category were quite predictable, with Shawn Mendes' 'Treat You Better' battling it out with Ed Sheeran's immensely popular 'Shape of You''Malibu' by Miley Cyrus,  Harry Styles' 'Sign Of The Times', 'Down' by Fifth Harmony ft. Gucci Mane, and 'Chained To The Rhythm' by Katy Perry ft. Skip Marley.

A newly created category at the 2017 MTV VMAs is Artist of the Year, which will see Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Katy Perry, and Lorde compete against each other.

This year's edition of the MTV VMAs will also have a Best Fight Against the System category, which is a rebranding of its social justice award.

"The addition of the ‘Best Fight Against the System’ category was added to the 2017 MTV VMAs to continue reflecting the audience’s passion and activism around social justice issues such as environmental justice, immigration, LGBTQ equality, and racial justice," an MTV spokesperson said to Vox.

The nominees in this category are John Legend with 'Surefire', Logic ft. Damian Lemar Hudson for 'Black SpBiderMan',  The Hamilton Mixtape for 'Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)', Big Sean's 'Light', Alessia Cara's 'Scars To Your Beautiful' and 'Stand Up / Stand N Rock #NoDAPL' by Taboo ft.
