Vidya Balan to be sued by producers of Kamala Das biopic for opting out of project?
It was reported last month that actor Vidya Balan walked out of Kamaluddin Muhammed's Aami, the Malayalam biopic of poetess Kamala Das. She cited 'divergent approaches to the process' as the reason behind her departure. Now, the producers of the film may take legal against Balan for quitting the film at the eleventh hour.
DNA reports that Kamal said that the producers got offended by Balan's last minute withdrawal as it projected the production house in bad light. They lost their market value and will have to start from scratch in order to resume the film. Besides the loss in goodwill, they also faced certain production costs.
The same report states that Kamal is discouraging the producers to take legal action against the actor as it is of no consequence. "What purpose will it serve? What is done is done. We’ve now found a fabulous replacement for Vidya. It’s time to move on. We begin shooting in March. Hopefully there will be no more setbacks," says Kamal.
While there were initial reports of Balan being replaced by Tabu in the film, Kamal clarified that he never approached Tabu for the role, as per a report by the Times of India.
Malayalam actor Manju Warrier has been finalised to replace Balan in the film. The report by DNA quotes Kamal as saying, "We’ve signed Manju Warrier to play Kamala Das. She is Malayali like her, and very focused on getting it right. She made a big name for herself. She took a longish break. Now she’s back and we’re very happy she has agreed to do our film.”
It was earlier reported that Balan walked out of Aami because of right-wing pressure after Kamal vocally objected to the detainment of a few audience members when they did not rise at the time of the recital of the National Anthem during the International Film Festival of Kerala last year.
