Stranger Things' Season 2 trailer: Things are about to get a lot more cryptic
Guess what's not so strange?
The fact that on 31 August 2016, Netflix announced that Stranger Things — the '80s nostalgia series starring Winona Ryder — is being renewed for a second season. The series, which has garnered critical and commercial acclaim worldwide, is coming back for a second second in 2017 and there's a teaser trailer to prove it.
For those who have not tuned in to Netflix's show, the science-fiction thriller follows the disappearance of a young boy and the way his town starts to unravel in mysterious, supernatural ways after he goes missing. Winona Ryder features as the boy's mother.
The show's mystique starts right with the novelty title music and visuals which are a throwback to Steven Spielberg films and horror novellas of the 1980s.
The teaser sequence is used as a cryptic story-telling tool which gives us clues about the second season. Going by the episode names of the first season, the nine phrases in the trailer might be clues to the episodes in season 2. The phrases — Madmax, The Boy Who Came Back to Life, The Pumpkin Patch, The Palace, The Storm, The Pollywog, The Secret Cabin, The Brain, and The Lost Brother— sound like chapter titles and might be sequential episodes titles for Stranger Things 2.
Showrunners Mark and Ross Duffer, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, spilled the beans about the second season. Here's what we know so far:
*The second season will have nine episodes as compared to season 1's eight episode run.
*The story will pick up a year after where season one ended. So it's flash forward to fall of 1984.
*Most of the main characters will be returning
But what about the fan favourite Eleven? “We don’t know about Eleven,” Ross Duffer told Entertainment Weekly. “We leave that up in the air.”
*There will be a few new characters: One episode in season two is titled The Lost Brother, which might be an introduction to one of the new characters.
*James Cameron is a big inspiration for the second season
Just as classic movies from The Goonies to Stand By Me were inspirations for the first season, the Duffers say sequels like Terminator 2 and Aliens are having a heavy influence on them as they develop the next batch of episodes. “I know movie sequels get a lot of s**t, but the ones we look up to aspire to pivot and do something different,” Matt Duffer said.
*Hawkins won’t be the only location: Season two will open up to another peaceful (and hopefully stranger?) small town.
*The Return of Upside Down: Everyone in the town of Hawkins will still have access to the other dimension 'Upside Down'.
