The new year of 2017 is just a month away and so is the fourth season of BBC's Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
But fans of the detective do not have to wait till the new year to get a glimpse of their favourite character in action. The first trailer was released at the San Diego Comic Con 2016, and it stated that 'everything they (Sherlock and Watson) know will be tested'; and took a darker, grim look at things.
The new teaser, which only lasts for 15 seconds, has a strange image of Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman's John Watson chilling out at 221B Baker Street…which has inexplicably begun to fill up with water. The imagery tells you everything you need to know — things are about to get very bad for these two. Sadly, there is no actual footage from the new season.
Complicating matters further is Toby Jones, who will be joining the show as another one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s villains. As creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss told Collider, "He's completely different. It’s a completely different character. He’s the darkest villain we’ve had. There was always something charming and engaging about Moriarty. There was something fascinating and actually amoral, rather than immoral, about Charles Augustus Magnussen. This guy is the purest evil. Sherlock is actually appalled by him. He’s the most evil villain we’ve had. I don’t think that when you see it, you will disagree. He's horrific."
We now know that Toby Jones will be playing Culverton Smith, the antagonist in the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Story, The Adventure of the Dying Detective, one of the final Sherlock Holmes stories. The story will probably be adapted into the second episode of Sherlock The Lying Detective, according to the series titles that were tweeted out. This short story sees Sherlock fake a terminal illness to coerce a guilty confession from an unhinged murdered.
