Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh at loggerheads again on Padmavati sets?
If Sanjay Leela Bhansali ever decides to make a no-holds-barred 'making of' film for his upcoming historical Padmavati, we can bet it would have viewers hooked.
An ambitious project that has garnered news ever since the auteur first announced that he was starting work on it post-Bajirao Mastani, Padmavati has a rumoured Rs 180 crore budget — and more troubles than can be tracked.
First, Bhansali had the deuce of a time finalising an actor to play Raja Ratan Rawal Singh — Rani Padmini's husband — to finish his lead troika (with his muses Deepika Padukone as Padmini and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji).
When Shahid Kapoor did step into the role, it triggered off a spate of reports about a rivalry brewing betwixt Ranveer and him.
Points of contention included Shahid being presented with a bound script when Ranveer was not, both actors being seemingly insecure about their screen time etc.
Barely had that smoothed over, than Bhansali found himself facing down threats from Hardik Patel and the Patidar Navnirman Sena. Their demands? Assure the Rajput community that the representation of Rani Padmini would be historically accurate, or we won't allow your film to be shot or screened in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
And then came reports that Eros, with whom Bhansali had collaborated on both Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani, had backed out of the project. The last updates involved the filmmaker looking for another studio to share the production costs.
The latest news stories about the film have speculated that Shahid Kapoor was on the verge of walking out of the project.
With the film's first poster soon to be unveiled, it seems Shahid didn't take too kindly to the possibility that he would be left out of the frame, with the focus only on Ranveer and Deepika's characters.
Moreover, some reports have also stated that Ranveer wanted Shahid's billing on the film's credits to be stated as a "guest appearance".
An entertainment news portal claimed that a meeting was held with Bhansali and his three stars in attendance this week, and that Ranveer, Shahid ironed out their differences at this time.
Neither actor has commented on the developments so far, so the reports will stay in the realm of speculation for now.
