What my mother couldn't achieve in 25 years, Aamir Khan is about to do this Sunday — get to me to wake up at about 10 am. That's right. I'm going to catch Satyamev Jayate at 11 am on Sunday, come hell or high water.
Why am I doing this? The answer is simple, really. It's Aamir Khan. What’s not to wake up? It's not everyday he's going to grace your television set with his presence, and when he does, you bow down and worship (him and the television set).
I've been an Aamir Khan fan for as long as I can remember. I was even convinced back in school that he was my soulmate (maybe I still am). Each time he announces the release of a movie, whether he's starring in it or producing it, I find myself nervously counting the days till I can go watch it. And most of the times he doesn't disappoint. Although I could have done without the torture that was Ghajini and the borefest of a Fanaa.
But see? That's the thing. I can forgive him anything. I can at best be miffed at him for a little while, and go back to being just as awestruck in about a week. You know he has something up his sleeve that will make it all worth it in the end.
He's different. He's intelligent. He's innovative. He's classy. He's stylish. He's subtle. He's exclusive. And he knows it.I can’t think of any other mainstream actor who plays an ACP, a terrorist, an art teacher, an engineering student, a Punjabi-lad-turned-revolutionary as convincingly each time, with the same panache and signature touch. All this despite being well above 40!
Aamir Khan is everything I want him to be. He’s real and he’s surreal. He keeps to himself and keeps me guessing. And I trust his judgement for taking up a TV show, knowing that whether or not I agree with the content, it definitely won't be run-of-the-mill. And it definitely won't be a tamasha, which really isn’t something I can say for most of the content on TV these days.
That's the faith he's built for me. And I'm going to sacrifice my sacred Sunday sleep, just for this faith.
See you at 11!
