Salman Khan's Tubelight to clash with Mahesh Babu's Sambhavami this Eid
Eid reserved for Salman Khan releases, Diwali for Shah Rukh Khan and Christmas for Aamir Khan. This has been the traditional setup of the calendar year in Hindi cinema for years. Rarely has any filmmaker or actor attempted to disturb the Khans' monopoly on their respective trademark festivals.
Salman's next, Kabir Khan's period war drama Tubelight, is slated to release this Eid on 25 June. But his box office run will not go unchallenged. Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu's next, tentatively titled Sambhavami, will release on the same day to cash in on the festive mood.
Both films belong to the same genre as they are action entertainers. Sambhavami is directed by AR Murugadoss. Bollywood Life reports that it is touted as the 2.0 version of Vijay's Thupakki, which was also directed by Murugadoss. The title of the film may be changed from Sambhavami to SPYder.
The film also stars SJ Surya, Bharath and Rakul Preet Singh, who will play the chief antagonist and will be seen in locking horns with Babu. The film will release in both Tamil and Telugu and Catch News now reports that it might also be released in Hindi.
Given Babu's immense popularity in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and Murugadoss' following in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Salman may lose out on the box office collections in majority of South India. If Babu's film releases in Hindi as well, it will also eat into the primary market of Tubelight.
Tubelight is Salman's third collaboration with Kabir after Ek Tha Tiger in 2012 and Bajrangi Bhaijaan in 2015. The film is set in the backdrop of the Indo-China War of 1962. Salman will play the role of a soldier and will be paired opposite Chinese actor Zhu Zhu. The film also stars his brother Sohail Khan and the late actor Om Puri, besides a cameo by Shah Rukh.
