Ram Gopal Varma's career shot to fame with his 1995 blockbuster Rangeela. The film also did wonders for its lead female actor Urmila Matondkar who became a star overnight. The two then collaborated on multiple films like Daud in 1997, Satya in 1998, Kaun and Mast in 1999, Jungle in 2000, Company in 2002, Bhoot in 2003 and Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag in 2007.
However, none of these films could replicate the box office success of Rangeela. Deccan Chroniclereports that the director and actor were planning to make a sequel to the blockbuster before the two had a fallout. Then, Varma, started looking for fresh faces to cast them in Rangeela 2.
Now, Zee Newsreports that the filmmaker dismissed the reports as untrue at the trailer launch of his upcoming political drama, Sarkar 3. He confirmed that Rangeela 2 is certainly not in the pipeline. While his current focus is on Sarkar 3, he has also announced his next project, Shasikala, which will revolve around the relationship between former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa and her close aide and former AIADMK chief Sasikala.
Rangeela became a landmark film in the history of Hindi cinema, owing to its music and choreography. It also redefined the way a mainstream Hindi film actor looked. It starred Aamir Khan, Matondkar and Jackie Shroff in lead roles. While Aamir played a street smart slum dweller, Matondkar played his childhood friend, another slum dweller who goes on to become a huge star, courtesy a rich film producer essayed by Shroff.
While Aamir did not work with Varma again, Shroff has collaborated with the filmmaker till date as he also stars in his next, Sarkar 3. He dons the same flamboyant avatar in Sarkar 3 like he did in Rangeela. With Rangeela 2 not on cards anymore, it may happen that the fans may end up cherishing Rangeela even more.
