Mid-Dayreports that Kapoor is currently shooting in Central Jail to portray the phase that Sanjay spent in Yerawada Jail, Pune. India.com reports that Central Jail, Bhopal has been converted into police headquarters and there are no inmates there, which makes it easier for the makers to shoot there.

Hindustan Timesreports that Kapoor will spend a week inside the cell in order to get into the skin of Dutt's character. Recently leaked pictures of him as a young Sanjay Dutt, and Paresh Rawal in the shoes of Sanjay's father Sunil Dutt, suggest that Hirani is leaving no stones unturned in replicating Sanjay's happening life.

The report by Mid-Day states that Anushka Sharma has also flown down to Bhopal now to shoot her part of a journalist. While she is busy promoting her upcoming production, Anshai Lal's Phillauri, she will shoot in Bhoopal till 12 March. The same report states that the makers have given a vast collection of yesteryear actor Nargis' films to Manisha Koirala for her to pick up the mannerisms of Sanjay's mother.

The film also stars Sonam Kapoor who plays Sanjay's past love interest, Vicky Kaushal who plays his friend from the USA, Jim Sarbh and Dia Mirza.

India.com quotes Hirani as saying, "We are targeting a Christmas 2017 release. It’s not a film about guns, drugs and the underworld. It’s a feel-good film about a father-son relationship…A buddy film with Sanju’s many friends adding up to one from the US, played by Vicky Kaushal.”

The report by Hindustan Times states that Sanjay has given 200 hours of recorded biographic material to Hirani for him to paint an accurate picture of his life.
