Ram Gopal Varma apologises for his Women's Day tweet after backlash from BJP, NCP

Ram Gopal Varma has apologised for  his contentious tweet on International Women's Day in which he expressed his desire to have all the women give as much happiness as Sunny Leone gives.

It evoked a harsh response, especially from his female Twitter followers who dubbed his tweet as extremely rude, especially as he chose to post it on a day when women are celebrated around the globe.

Sensing major backlash, including from political and activist groups, he issued an apology through a tweet. But in typical RGV style. he also tweeted a disclaimer clarifying that he is only apologising to those who were genuinely hurt by his tweet and not those who opposed it merely to gain publicity or those who threatened to punish him unlawfully.

Varma's tweet had evoked extreme reactions from social activists and politicians but surprisingly, Leone did not take offence to the tweet as she replied to it with wink and tongue-out emoticons.

Later, when she was asked about the extreme reaction of the tweet, she said, "That's not a dig. He is a friend. He is making a joke. In good humor. Not everything is controversial." Thus, she took Varma's tweet in good stride and did not agree with many that he was taking a potshot at her, as reported by Firstpost Hindi.

A few days later, she posted a video of her on all social media sites in which she preaches her fans about choosing their words wisely. Though this may be a dig at Varma, it may also be a potshot at his detracters, particularly the politicians who threatened Varma.

While she may be confident about Varma's intentions, certain sections of society are not. Ram Kadam, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, tweeted his support to women who felt offended by Varma's statement. He declared that, in the capacity of the President of Film Studio Setting and Allied Majdoor Union, he will not allow Varma to shoot for his films until he apologizes for his insensitive tweet. He also requested actor Amitabh Bachchan to stop shooting with Varma for his upcoming political drama Sarkar 3.

Besides the 52,000 members of the union, National Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson Vidya Chavan has also expressed her angst towards Varma's remark. She threatens to start a 'Joote Maaro Aandolan' against him,i.e., to beat him with shoes until he retracts his comment and apologizes. Pratiksha Korgaonkar, State Organiser, Women's Branch of Hindi Janjagruti, filed a police complaint in Goa against the filmmaker. She alleged that Varma had a malicious intention in his remark as it was just to gain cheap popularity at the expense of indecent representation of women, as reported by The Indian Express. She alleged that Varma's tweet is objectionable and is intended to defame ordinary women. She requested the police that a case be made against Varma under "cyber law for victimisation of women" under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. She also put forward her request to block his Twitter account on a permanent basis. WhatsApp Image 2017-03-08 at 20.04.38 Varma reacted to the police complaint through a rather predictable tweet.

Varma has come under the scanner for his offensive tweets multiple times, another recent one directed towards actor Tiger Shroff in which Varma suggested that the actor is gay and how the way he poses does not make him a 'real man'.
