When Parineeti Chopra smiles, she lights up the screen. We've heard the actress sing before, mostly in promotions of her films, but in her next film with Ayushmann Khurrana, YRF's Meri Pyaari Bindu, she finally makes her singing debut, with a song called 'Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahi'.
It's a slow song that depends a lot on Parineeti's screen presence. As the song plays out, we see Chopra crooning the song as casually as she would, if she were sitting at home. This adds to the charm of the song, which sounds a lot like a ghazal.
We see her lost in her own thoughts, looking through the things around her, like an empty bed, or old audio cassettes, and reminiscing. The song seems to be about longing and nostalgia. She seems to be struggling with the higher notes and seems a lot more comfortable with the lower notes in the song. It has also been shot like an ad-meets-a-music-video with way too much light on Parineeti, and way too many shots with her sitting in front of a mic.
We would have definitely preferred more snippets from the film, and a verse or two with fellow singer and costar Ayushmann. But given we don't know much about the film yet, there could be way more surprises coming our way.
If you're a fan of fast, thumping music, you will find 'Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahi' a bit dull. It does have an old-school sound and vibe to it with unwinding verses and a chorus. The melody of the song takes its time to settle with you, but it's a good melody nonetheless. The song has definitely gotten us curious about the film, Meri Pyaari Bindu.
For a singing debut, this is a good job on Parineeti's part. However, here are two clips of her singing 'Pareshaan' from her film Ishaqzaade, and 'Yeh Saazish Hai Boondon Ki' from YRF film Fanaa. In our humblest of opinions, she sounds much more fresh and relaxed in these clips, as opposed to a heavily produced track.
But one thing is certain, it's good to see Parineeti back on the big screen.
