Pahlaj Nihalani sacked as CBFC chairman: Tweeple feel '007 can now kiss on Indian screens'
Pahlaj Nihalani's removal as the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Friday came out of the blue and made him perfect fodder for trolls on social media. Nihalani's three-year term was due to be completed in January 2018. Filmmakers like Prakash Jha and Madhur Bhandarkar, as well as producer Chandraprakash Dwivedi, were rumoured to be considered for the CBFC chief's post before it was announced famed lyricist Prasoon Joshi will take over Nihalani's position.
Nihalani is well-known to court controversy for his views on film censorship, from removing James Bond's kissing scenes to initially banning Lipstick Under My Burkha for being a "lady-oriented film".
Here's what people have got to say about the decision on Twitter:
Pahlaj Nihalani gets fired the same day Toilet Ek Prem Katha releases. Glad India is finally taking sanitation seriously.
