Padman box office collection: Akshay Kumar-starrer inches closer to Rs 50 cr mark after opening weekend

Akshay Kumar’s  Padman  is currently dominating theatre screens after registering an impressive opening. The Twinkle Khanna-backed film, which is based on the story of sanitary napkin crusader Arunachalam Muruganantham, tackles the stigma around menstruation in India. Starring Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor in leading roles, the film had a Rs 10.26 crore opening on Friday (9 February). Padman made Rs 13.68 crore on Saturday (10 February), and, according to the latest figures, the R Balki directed movie has raked in Rs 16.11 crore on Sunday.

#PadMan showed GOOD TRENDING over the weekend... Starting on ordinary levels, the momentum over the weekend helped put up a credible total... Word of mouth is strong... Weekdays are crucial... Fri 10.26 cr, Sat 13.68 cr, Sun 16.11 cr. Total: ₹ 40.05 cr. India biz.

Its two-day domestic total currently stands at Rs 40.05 crore. The social media campaign, spearheaded by the lead actors and Khanna, has immensely contributed to the film’s commercial success. Critically, Padman has mostly received positive reviews for being an  important yet entertaining film . Trade analysts therefore expect the film to soar high in the coming days. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, too, has covered its cost of production (reportedly Rs 180 crore). Both film were supposed to clash at the box office before Bhansali requested Akshay to push his film by a couple of days. Currently in its 3rd week, the Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor-starrer has minted Rs 239.50 crore at the domestic box office. Internationally, Padmaavat seems to be racing ahead of Padman with a continued strong showing despite being in the theatres for three weeks now. According to R Bala’s estimate, Padman seems to have left a mark on the US box office more than in other countries.
