National Film Awards ceremony: Akshay Kumar, Zaira Wasim, Sonam Kapoor honoured
The 2016 National Film Awards ceremony was held on 3 May, 2017 and President Pranab Mukherjee awarded and honoured the winners. This was the 64th edition of this award ceremony.
Jury chairperson Priyadarshan said that while movies are subjective, he believes that the decision of a jury should not be questioned. He said that social issues, culture, beliefs, projecting India were the major factors the jury kept in mind while analysing movies.
The number of regional film submissions was described as "encouraging". The six film industries from South India — Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu and Konkani — won 18 awards.
Sonam Kapoor and Shubhashish Bhutiani were awarded special mentions for Neerja and Mukti Bhawan respectively. Neerja was also awarded the Best Hindi Film award.
Zaira Wasim was awarded the Best Female Supporting Actress award for Dangal.
Akshay Kumar was awarded the Best Actor award for Rustom.
It was heart-warming to see Anil Kapoor cheer on Sonam as she was being felicitated on stage. The camera also cut to Twinkle Khanna and her son as Akshay Kumar won his award. Legendary director K Vishwanath was also awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
