The Times of India reports that Hirani has confirmed that he will direct one more installment of the franchise and will begin working on it as soon as he wraps up the shooting of Dutt's biopic. He admitted that he had started working on the third installment, then titled Munnabhai Chale America, as soon as the second part, Lage Raho Munnabhai, released to a great response in 2006. They had even shot a trailer for the film. However, they shelved the film after the second half of the film fell flat.

The same report quotes him as saying, "I don't want to make a Munna Bhai which is not as good, if not better, than the previous two. I'm going to make just one more after which someone else can take the franchise forward and it has to be equally good." Hirani stated that he had five half-baked scripts on his table but he did not think that either of them could do justice to the franchise.

DNAreports that after Munna Bhai Chale America was shelved, there was also rumours of filmmaker Subhash Kapoor directing the third installment. But the conjecture was laid to rest after Dutt was arrested in 2013.

When the actor was out on a parole, Hirani used to meet him to discuss a story idea for the third installment that struck him towards the end of the shooting of his 2014 science fiction satire PK. It was then that Hirani got so fascinated by Dutt's anecdotes that he decided to make a biopic on the actor, further pushing the third part of Munna Bhai.

Now, Hirani has confirmed that his associate Abhijat Joshi is working on the script simultaneously as Hirani shoots for Dutt's biopic and that the director will join Joshi as soon as he is done with the current project. The report by the Times of India quotes him as saying, "The topic is such that it will suit an older Sanjay and Arshad (Warsi). Physically Munna and Circuit might change a bit but they will continue to be my divine fools."
