Former captain of the Indian cricket team MS Dhoni is set to produce a film based on the life of hockey player Dhyan Chand, which will be directed by Rohit Vaid.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a source said that Varun Dhawan will play the lead role in this film. "Cricketer MS Dhoni has acquired the rights of the film and might produce it. It is still not clear whether Karan [Johar] will be co-producing the film, but Rohit is very much directing the film with Varun," the source said.
Last year, Karan Johar announced that this biopic will be made and that he will be producing it. Reports suggest that Dhawan first turned down the role, and then Johar and Dhawan apparently did not want Vaid to direct the film, but they could not cut him out of the film's rights. Additionally, the buzz is that Johar was not happy with the script of the film, and that Vaid has revised it.
Dhyan Chand is considered one of the greatest hockey players across the world. Over the course of his career, he scored more than 400 goals and won three Olympic medals. In 2014, he was one of the people being considered for the Bharat Ratna.
This will be MS Dhoni's second association with Hindi films, the first being his biopic MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, which starred Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role.
Varun Dhawan was last seen in Badrinath Ki Dulhania. His upcoming projects include Judwaa 2, which is a sequel of the 1997 film Judwaa and Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari's next, which is said to be a romantic-action drama.
